Microchip Launches 90W Industrial PoE Midspan for Smart Factories

THE VOLT VOTES

As industrial systems grow more connected and automated, Power over Ethernet (PoE) is becoming a critical enabler delivering both power and data over a single cable while simplifying deployment and scalability. Addressing this demand, Microchip Technology has expanded its PoE portfolio with the launch of the PD-9601GCI Midspan, an industrial-grade solution built to meet IEEE 802.3bt standards.

Industrial PoE PD-9601GCI Midspan by Microchip The Volt PostDesigned for harsh environments, the PD-9601GCI delivers up to 90W of power along with Gigabit Ethernet speeds (10/100/1000 Mbps) over a single cable.

Unlike Microchip’s indoor-focused PC-9601GC, this new midspan is engineered for industrial use cases, helping reduce the need for complex electrical infrastructure and additional power outlets.

The device is tailored for reliability in remote and demanding settings. It features a sealed, vibration-resistant metal enclosure with an IP30 rating, along with an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to 75°C.

Support for dual DC inputs (20V-60V) adds flexibility in power sourcing, while built-in surge protection safeguards equipment from voltage spikes common in industrial environments.

Flexible mounting options including DIN rail, wall, and panel mounting, further support deployment across factory floors and outdoor installations. Microchip has also conducted compatibility testing with industrial automation equipment to ease integration and improve system reliability.

Midspans, which sit between the network switch and endpoint devices, inject power into Ethernet lines, enabling simultaneous power and data transmission.

This makes them particularly useful for deploying IoT and industrial devices in locations where traditional power access is limited. By bundling midspans with connected devices, manufacturers can deliver plug-and-play solutions that streamline installation and reduce costs.

With more than 25 years of experience in PoE technology, Microchip has played a key role in shaping IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt standards. Today, the company offers a broad portfolio of PoE solutions including PSE chipsets, PD chipsets, and complete systems designed to support a wide range of industrial and networking applications.

“In a market where many existing networks don’t fully support PoE’s convenient single-cable deployment models, our industrial-grade PD-9601GCI midspan makes it easier for our customers to power their smart equipment in factories and industrial settings,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s networking and connectivity business unit. “Additionally, our customers have the option to use our midspans as a private label powering option, enabling them to differentiate their products by offering a simpler integrated power solution.”
