FEMTO Brings Sovereign AI Infrastructure to India

THE VOLT VOTES

KBE and Vigyanlabs Innovations Pvt. Ltd. officially launches FEMTO, an indigenous sovereign AI infrastructure platform, on September 5, 2026, at JSS College of Pharmacy in Mysuru. The launch is stated to mark a major step in the companies’ plans to build and deploy secure, high-performance AI infrastructure in India.KBE, Vigyanlabs FEMTO sovereign AI infrastructure platform The Volt Post

Dr S. Somanath, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), attended the event as Chief Guest and formally unveil the platform. The event will also include panel discussions focused on sovereign AI infrastructure, along with the introduction of FEMTO’s mascot, Airawatt.

The platform is being developed through Kasvin, a joint venture created by KBE subsidiary Krishnaa Advance Systems (KAS) and Vigyanlabs. The partnership combines KAS’ experience in infrastructure execution, data centre deployment and market access with Vigyanlabs’ deep-tech capabilities and proprietary FEMTO technology.

The companies have also outlined a planned investment of ?100 crore over the coming year to support FEMTO’s deployment and scale-up across the country.

An AI Infrastructure Platform in a Single Unit

Rather than functioning as a conventional server, FEMTO is designed as a modular, integrated infrastructure platform that brings computing, storage, networking, virtualisation and orchestration together in a single air-gapped unit.

The platform will be available in four variants and runs on Virtune, Vigyanlabs’ proprietary orchestration and virtualisation hypervisor, alongside IPM+, its patented intelligent power-management technology.

According to the companies, IPM+ has already been deployed across more than 6 lakh PCs and desktops globally and uses AI to understand user behaviour and optimise power consumption, with reported savings of up to 30%.

At the high end of the FEMTO range, a single FEMTO-4 appliance can support AI models with more than 400 billion parameters, while providing eight GPUs and 768GB of GPU VRAM at less than 5.5kW.

The system is also designed around a 100% air-cooled architecture, eliminating dependence on water for cooling. The companies claim a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of below 1.3, compared with the typical 1.8–2.0 range cited for conventional data centre infrastructure.

This approach, according to KBE and Vigyanlabs, could reduce power consumption by around 50%, data centre capital expenditure by 30%, and bring total operating costs to roughly one-third of those associated with traditional facilities.

Building a Sovereign AI Infrastructure Ecosystem

The FEMTO launch follows a strategic agreement between KAS and Vigyanlabs aimed at accelerating the deployment of sovereign AI and high-performance computing infrastructure across India.

Under the partnership, KAS has secured a Right of First Refusal (ROFR) for the commercialisation, deployment and scaling of FEMTO-based solutions across identified sectors. This positions KAS as a preferred partner for taking the platform into areas including government, defence, enterprise AI, edge computing and data centres.

The focus on sovereign infrastructure comes as organisations increasingly look to keep sensitive data and AI workloads within national boundaries while maintaining control over the underlying computing infrastructure.

Engineering Built Around Efficiency

FEMTO the new sovereign AI infrastructure platform is being engineered by Srinivas Varadarajan, whose previous experience includes roles at HP and Dell as well as work as the Principal Architect of India’s Aadhaar data centre. His work has also included the development of sustainable data centre infrastructure internationally.

Vigyanlabs brings more than 18 years of deep-tech experience to the project, along with nine US patents and a reported track record of delivering more than 2,000 GWh in energy savings through its earlier deployments.

The venture is being led on the execution side by Rahul Bahl, Managing Director of KAS, who is overseeing the scale-up and commercial deployment of the platform.

With its combination of indigenous technology, air-gapped security and energy-efficient infrastructure, FEMTO is positioned by its developers as an attempt to rethink how sovereign AI infrastructure can be deployed, from individual modular units to larger data centre environments.KBE, Vigyanlabs FEMTO sovereign AI infrastructure platform The Volt Post
