Comminent’s Wi-SUN modules are powered by Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 Wireless SoC, a platform purpose-built for large-scale smart grid and industrial IoT networks.

Comminent Ships 500K Wi-SUN Modules for India’s Smart Grid The Volt Post

Comminent, an innovator in next-generation IoT communication platforms, and Silicon Labs announces to have hit a major milestone for India’s smart grid. The duo in its official release has stated that they have achieved successful shipment of over 500,000 Wi-SUN-compliant communication modules built around Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 Wireless SoC.

Scaling Wi-SUN Modules for India’s Smart Grid

India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) is one of the world’s largest energy-infrastructure modernization programs.

At the heart of it is a massive rollout of smart meters, and the government has backed Wi-SUN modules as the future face of the network.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has formally adopted the global Wi?SUN Field Area Network (FAN) specification IEEE 2857-2021 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 32857:2026 as the national standard IS 18010 for smart meter RF communication.

This move locks in secure, interoperable wireless mesh networks that can scale to support Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), smart cities, and broader IoT use cases across the country.

Tackling Real-World Deployment Complexity

India’s utilities face a tough mix of terrain, density, and legacy infrastructure. Comminent’s strength lies in designing solutions that can handle that complexity at scale.

As utilities move toward real-time monitoring and stronger grid resilience, Wi-SUN modules self?healing, interoperable mesh networks are emerging as the backbone for city-wide and even state?level deployments.

Built on the EFR32FG28 for Utility-Grade Reliability

Comminent’s Wi-SUN modules are powered by Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 Wireless SoC, a platform purpose-built for large-scale smart grid and industrial IoT networks.

The SoC Delivers:

  • Dual-band connectivity: A high-performance Sub-GHz radio tuned for India’s RF conditions, plus a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth LE radio for flexible configuration and local commissioning.
  • Resilient compute and infrastructure: A multi-core architecture with dedicated ARM cores for application, radio, and edge-intelligence workloads, backed by generous memory to keep dense urban and wide-area mesh networks running smoothly.
  • Enterprise-grade security: Silicon Labs’ Secure Vault™ technology with PSA Level 3 certification gives strong key storage, anti-tamper protection, and hardware-accelerated cryptography, so authentication and data integrity stay rock-solid even at massive scale.

Comminent Ships 500K Wi-SUN Modules for India’s Smart Grid The Volt PostTogether, this lets utilities roll out scalable, secure Wi-SUN networks that can support millions of smart meter endpoints and lay the foundation for future grid services.

With proven performance in India’s large-scale deployments, Comminent is now turning its sights outward, expanding into global smart grid markets such as the United States, Japan, and other energy-transition-focused regions.
