The element14 community is calling on engineers and hardware makers to tackle the growing waste management crisis with intelligent electronics. In its newly launched smart sustainability design challenge, the platform is pushing tech enthusiasts to prototype automated recycling and environmental sustainability systems. The design prompt is wide open. Whether it’s architecting a smart-city waste network, using computer vision to automatically sort recyclables, or engineering an autonomous household trash bin, participants are challenged to build real-world solutions utilizing sensors, automation, and intelligent control systems.

To help get these prototypes off the ground, element14 will select five applicants to receive a complimentary hardware component kit.
Those chosen will be tasked with documenting their engineering journey through blog posts on the element14 Community. The final builds will be judged heavily on technical execution, overall innovation, and how creatively the makers utilized their provided kits.
There is some serious hardware on the line for the top designs. The grand prize winner of Smart sustainability design challenge will walk away with a TUF Gaming Laptop and a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Expansion Chassis. Second place takes home a MacBook Neo and an expansion chassis, while third place secures an expansion chassis of their own.
As a fun bonus, anyone who successfully completes the build challenge will be rewarded with a Thunderbolt 3 Mini Docking Station and an RC garbage truck.
The clock is ticking for interested makers: applications close on October 18.
The five chosen participants will then have until December 13 to wrap up their builds and submit their final entries, with the ultimate winners crowned in January 2027.
