As the semiconductor industry pushes the limits of silicon carbide (SiC) for high-voltage applications, the margin for manufacturing error is rapidly shrinking. To help device makers boost yields and cut down on costly defects, Wolfspeed has officially rolled out its new Premium 200 mm n-type SiC substrate.
The shift toward larger die sizes and higher power capacities demands flawless starting materials. Wolfspeed’s new Premium 200 mm n-type SiC substrate is engineered to take the guesswork out of the manufacturing process by tackling defect density and wafer-shape stability head-on.
By delivering a more consistent foundation, the Premium 200 mm n-type SiC substrate material gives chipmakers a highly predictable starting point, meaning a better chance of first-time design success and fewer delays in qualification.
When it comes to the specifications, the new substrate represents a significant leap in bare-wafer quality.
It features fewer than 0.01 micropipes per square centimeter, translating to less than three micropipes across an entire wafer as validated by industry-standard X-ray topography.
It also features low threading screw dislocations. Because of this high baseline quality and lot-to-lot consistency, manufacturers can achieve better epitaxial performance entirely within their existing processes.
The premium material is available to order today. Backed by its massive SiC manufacturing footprint, Wolfspeed says it has the dedicated capacity and scalability ready to meet surging market demand. The launch builds on a highly mature supply foundation for the company, which has been refining its continuous 200 mm production lines since 2022.
