China is fast cementing its lead in the global robotics boom, with 15 new billion-dollar startups emerging this year, more than double the six from the United States. The surge comes as embodied AI and humanoid robotics attract record investor interest, turning 2026 into a watershed year for the sector.

Robotics Emerges as Second-Hottest Unicorn Sector

Robotics has become the second most active sector for unicorn creation in 2026, trailing only AI. So far this year, 23 private robotics companies have crossed the $1 billion valuation threshold, collectively worth $39.9 billion.

By comparison, AI produced 36 unicorns valued at $73.5 billion, while HealthTech, Fintech, and Defense & SecurityTech each generated 11–14 new unicorns.

The data, compiled by BestBrokers using Crunchbase, PitchBook, and other sources as of July 2026, shows investor appetite shifting from pure software to physical, AI-powered machines.

China Dominates Both Numbers and Valuations

Of the 23 new robotics unicorns, 21 are based in China or the U.S. China accounts for 15—including one in Hong Kong, representing roughly 65% of the global total. The U.S. trails with six. Japan and the U.K. each produced one: Genki Robotics in Tokyo and Humanoid in London.

The valuation gap is even starker. China’s new robotics unicorns total $27.5 billion in combined value, nearly triple the $10 billion amassed by their U.S. counterparts.

Four of the five most valuable new robotics unicorns are Chinese:

  • AI2 Robotics (China) – $3.0 billion
  • X Square Robot (China) – $3.0 billion
  • Xvariable Robot (China) – $2.9 billion
  • Xinghaitu (China) – $2.9 billion
  • Mind Robotics (U.S.) – $2.0 billion

AI2 Robotics and X Square Robot both announced major funding rounds in June, pushing their valuations past $2.8–$3 billion.

AI2 raised about $735 million, while X Square completed four consecutive rounds, including a Series C, backed by ByteDance, Xiaomi, Alibaba, and Meituan.

U.S. leaders include Mind Robotics and Generalist, each valued at $2 billion, followed by Bedrock Robotics ($1.8B), Rhoda AI ($1.7B), and Sunday ($1.5B).

Europe and Japan Enter the Race

Outside the U.S.-China axis, Europe and Japan logged their first pure-play robotics unicorns of 2026. UK-based Humanoid raised $152 million in a July Series A, valuing the company at $1.35 billion.

In Tokyo, Genki Robotics, founded in 2025 by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, hit a $1 billion valuation after its April Series A. Both focus on bipedal humanoid robots powered by embodied AI.

What the Data Signals

“Many people have assumed that China’s manufacturing strength would eventually give it an edge in robotics, and this year’s unicorn data suggests that may already be happening,” said Alan Goldberg, lead data analyst at BestBrokers. “China accounts for nearly two-thirds of this year’s newly minted robotics unicorns, but more importantly it is home to all four of the highest-valued new entrants, while these startups collectively command almost three times the valuation of their U.S. counterparts. Investors appear to be betting that the next generation of AI won’t just live on screens—it will be built into machines, and China is increasingly where those companies are emerging.”
