LG Chem is making a clear move beyond its core chemicals business and into semiconductor materials as the company marks a new supply deal with Amkor Technology. The company has started mass supplying a semiconductor stripper tailored for Amkor’s production line, marking its first commercial step into the chip materials market.

Semiconductor chemicals push
The product at the center of the deal is a process chemical used to remove photoresist and residue after circuit patterning, a crucial step in semiconductor manufacturing.
LG Chem says the customized stripper can cut removal time by about 50 percent compared with existing products, which should help improve manufacturing efficiency.
The company also said the new material builds on know-how it developed in its display stripper business. That experience helped LG Chem meet the tighter demands of chip packaging and testing customers and pass Amkor’s qualification process.
Why Amkor matters
Amkor is one of the world’s leading outsourced semiconductor assembly and test companies, which makes it an important customer for any supplier trying to gain ground in advanced packaging.
Landing a deal with Amkor gives LG Chem a foothold in a supply chain that is growing more complex as AI chips, high-bandwidth memory and smaller device designs continue to raise technical requirements.
The partnership also reflects how semiconductor materials are becoming more customized and process-specific. LG Chem’s CEO, Kim Dong-chun, said the company will work closely with Amkor to strengthen its competitiveness in materials tailored to customer manufacturing needs.
Bigger materials strategy
LG Chem is not treating this as a one-off launch. Earlier this year, the company said it plans to more than double its electronic materials business by expanding deeper into semiconductor packaging materials such as copper clad laminates, die attach films and photosensitive dielectric materials.
That broader strategy places semiconductor materials at the center of LG Chem’s growth ambitions. It also fits a wider shift across the chemical industry, where companies are chasing higher-value markets with stronger technical differentiation and better margins than commodity products.
The move highlights how advanced packaging has become a key battleground for materials suppliers. As chipmakers and OSAT players push for better performance and higher yields, process chemicals that improve efficiency and reliability are gaining strategic importance.
For LG Chem, the Amkor deal is both a validation of its technical capabilities and a strategic opening into the semiconductor supply chain. It gives the company a starting point to build a broader portfolio for advanced packaging customers worldwide.
