The New Science of Engine Oil in Hybrid Vehicles

THE VOLT VOTES

As hybrid vehicles become more mainstream, they are reshaping not just powertrain design but also the requirements for engine lubrication. MANNOL is responding to this shift with a new generation of engine oils tailored specifically for hybrid applications, aimed at improving efficiency, durability, and overall engine protection.

Unlike conventional internal combustion engines that operate under relatively stable conditions, hybrid powertrains introduce a far more dynamic environment.

Frequent start-stop cycles, cold starts, and fluctuating load profiles place significantly higher demands on engine oils, particularly in terms of wear protection, viscosity stability, and long-term performance.

One of the key challenges is the intermittent operation of the engine. In hybrid systems, the combustion engine often runs under suboptimal temperature conditions, requiring lubricants that can quickly form a stable protective film even at low temperatures.

At the same time, repeated start-stop cycles increase the likelihood of fuel dilution and condensation, which can degrade oil quality, alter viscosity, and accelerate corrosion if not properly managed.

Thermal stress is another critical factor. Hybrid systems are designed to operate the engine within highly efficient ranges, but this can lead to localized temperature spikes. Engine oils must therefore maintain stability under high thermal loads, resist oxidation, and minimize friction to support overall system efficiency.

The integration of electric motors and power electronics in close proximity to the engine further adds to the complexity. In some hybrid architectures, lubricants must also meet specific material compatibility requirements and interact safely with electrically sensitive components.

To address these evolving challenges, MANNOL is continuously refining its formulations using high-quality base oils and advanced additive technologies. These are designed to ensure rapid lubrication, high oxidation resistance, and strong protection against wear, deposits, and corrosion.

As hybrid adoption accelerates, purpose-built engine oils are becoming a critical enabler of performance and reliability helping extend engine life while supporting the efficiency gains that hybrid systems promise.

Konstantin Gaab, Managing Director of MANNOL/SCT Germany: “Even under high-stress conditions, such as during a sudden overtaking manoeuvre or rapid acceleration, the engine must deliver its maximum power within a very short time. In such cases, the engine is often not yet within its optimum operating temperature range, but is virtually cold. Under these conditions, the engine oil must immediately form a reliable lubricating film whilst simultaneously meeting the increased demands for wear protection, friction minimisation and thermal stability. These specific operating profiles clearly demonstrate that hybrid powertrains place specific demands on modern engine oils.”
