STMicroelectronics Launches Quantum-Ready ST54M Secure Chip

STMicroelectronics has launched the ST54M, a secure mobile chip built to help smartphone and personal electronics makers prepare for the next wave of quantum-ready security without disrupting the user experience.

The new single-die device combines an NFC controller, secure element and eSIM support with a hardware accelerator for post-quantum cryptography. In practical terms, that means it is designed to support secure mobile services now while helping devices stay ready for the stronger security standards expected in the years ahead.

ST54M is aimed at a wide range of connected use cases, including contactless payments, transit ticketing, access control, digital identity, driving licenses, connectivity services and digital car keys. As mobile devices take on more roles in finance, identity and secure access, the need for a platform that can handle multiple functions without adding complexity is becoming more important.

The chip is designed to give OEMs and ecosystem partners a single platform for multiple applications while keeping the user experience simple and familiar. It is being introduced now so customers have enough time to build post-quantum-ready solutions ahead of expected industry requirements around 2030.

A key highlight of ST54M is its hardware support for post-quantum cryptography algorithms such as ML-KEM and ML-DSA. This is intended to help move the industry from hybrid cryptographic approaches toward full post-quantum security while also providing protection against side-channel and fault-injection attacks.

ST says the device builds on its broader security roadmap, which also includes certified software libraries such as NesLib-PQML and X-CUBE-PQC for STM32 microcontrollers. Together, these tools are meant to give developers more flexibility as they transition to new security models.

Beyond security, ST54M also focuses on performance and integration. It offers large memory capacity for multiple applications and an improved RF front end, which can help support smaller antennas, more stable reader-writer operation, and demanding use cases such as mobile point-of-sale terminals and wireless charging.

The platform has already completed certification testing under Common Criteria 2022 EUCC and EMVCo, reinforcing its fit for security-sensitive mobile applications.
