Littelfuse has introduced its new SM15KPA-HR/HRA and SM30KPA-HR/HRA High-Reliability TVS Diode Series, designed to deliver robust lightning-induced transient protection for avionics, aviation electronics, defense systems, eVTOL platforms, and other mission-critical applications that demand high power, high reliability, and stringent screening.

Housed in a compact SPD4-1 surface-mount package, these devices provide 15 kW or 30 kW peak pulse dissipation (10/1000 -s) while fully supporting standard SMT pick-and-place assembly offering a clear advantage over traditional high?power axial TVS diodes.

Both series deliver sub?1 ps response time, strong clamping performance, low incremental surge resistance, and reliable operation across a -55 °C to 150 °C junction temperature range.

The SM15KPA-HR/HRA and SM30KPA-HR/HRA families are among the few high-power, high-reliability SMT TVS diodes developed specifically for avionics, supporting lightning surge protection up to RTCA/DO-160 Waveform 5A Level 5.

Each device undergoes extensive screening, including 100% surge testing, high-temperature storage, temperature cycling, X-ray inspection, HTRB testing, and final electrical characterization in line with MIL-STD-750.

Key features and benefits include:

  • Up to 15 kW or 30 kW peak pulse powerfor lightning and high-energy surge protection.
  • 30 kV ESDprotection for data lines per IEC 61000?4-2, plus EFT immunity per IEC 61000-4-4.
  • Excellent clamping behavior with low incremental surge resistanceand <1 ps response time for sensitive circuitry.
  • High-temperature reflow capability (245 °C / 10 s), matte-tin, RoHS-compliantconstruction, and whisker testing per JEDEC JESD201A.
  • DO-160 Waveform 5A Level 5protection capability for demanding aerospace environments.

Typical target markets and applications include:

  • Avionics flight computers and control systems.
  • Navigation, communication, and radar electronics.
  • eVTOL propulsion and battery management systems.
  • Defense and aerospace power distribution modules.
  • High-reliability industrial and transportation platforms that must withstand lightning surges and severe transient events.
