element14’s award-winning podcast Top Tech Voices second season kicks off with two compelling episodes that explore how technology affects both human wellbeing and planetary sustainability.

The opening conversations of Top Tech Voices second season features neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis and environmental innovator Fionn Ferreira, two thinkers coming at technology from very different, yet deeply human, angles.
In episode one, Mental Health & Technology: Navigating the Digital Mind, Dr. Jack Lewis unpacks how digital tools are reshaping cognitive health. Instead of painting technology as purely good or bad, Lewis argues that its impact depends on how we use it. Digital tools can boost efficiency and broaden access to information, but heavy screen time can crowd out the habits that actually support long-term brain health like physical movement, deep focus, and in-person connection.
Drawing on neuroscience, Lewis explains how exercise boosts memory and resilience by releasing Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), and how uninterrupted social interaction strengthens the neural pathways tied to empathy and understanding. His message is not to ditch devices, but to use them more intentionally. The episode pushes professionals and organisations to ask how digital environments can be designed and managed to support mental wellbeing instead of eroding it.
Episode two turns to environmental technology with award?winning inventor Fionn Ferreira. Growing up in West Cork, Ireland, Ferreira began studying microplastic pollution as a teenager after noticing how badly his local coastline was contaminated. With little lab access, he improvised his own scientific tools including a spectrometer built from a Raspberry Pi, a webcam, and Lego to analyse water samples.
That work led him to develop a magnetic method for removing microplastics using specially engineered ferrofluids. The innovation attracted global attention and support, including backing linked to initiatives spotlighted at the World Economic Forum.
In his conversation on Top Tech Voices, Ferreira talks about the real challenges of scaling an environmental innovation from lab prototype to industrial deployment. He stresses that invention is rarely a one?person effort; real progress depends on collaboration, storytelling, and long?term persistence.
Together, the Top Tech Voices second season first two episodes set the tone from protecting cognitive resilience in an always-on world to building scalable solutions for environmental crises, the series continues to explore how technology can tackle real?world problems when guided by insight, empathy, and intention.
Leadership Comment
