ROHM 3-Phase Brushless DC Motor Gate Driver Cuts FET Heat, Lowers EMI

For medium voltage applications (12 to 48V systems), ROHM developed the “BD67871MWV-Z” three-phase brushless DC motor gate driver. It significantly lowers FET switching loss while preserving low EMI—typically a trade-off in motor driver ICs—by utilizing ROHM’s own gate drive technology, TriC3.

The BD67871MWV-Z is equipped with ROHM’s proprietary Active Gate Drive technology, “TriC3,” which quickly detects voltage information from external power FETs and instantly modifies gate drive current. In order to achieve minimal EMI, this simultaneously suppresses ringing and significantly lowers FET switching loss (and consequently heat generation) and FET power consumption during switching.

TriC3 gate drive has been demonstrated on actual motors to reduce FET heat generation by about 35% while retaining comparable EMI levels when compared to ROHM’s conventional constant-current drive products.

Additionally, BD67871MWV-Z uses the UQFN28 package and pin configuration, which are frequently utilized in motor driver integrated circuits (ICs) for medium-voltage industrial equipment applications. This reduces the amount of engineering work needed for circuit modifications and new designs.

ROHM 12–48V brushless DC motor gate driver TriC3 Since motors use over 60% of the world’s electricity, control technology that influences energy efficiency is becoming more and more important. A straightforward setup with an MCU controlling three gate drivers has been the standard for 12V to 48V motor drive applications.

However, the need for precise control and great efficiency has increased recently, hastening the adoption of solutions that combine an MCU with an integrated three-phase motor driver.

The trade-off between “power consumption reduction” and “noise / EMI (electro-magnetic interference) reduction” has also presented a technical problem in three-phase motor drivers.

Availability, Evaluation Board and Pricing

Mass production of the new product commenced in September 2025 (sample price: $5.5/unit, tax excluded). Both the new product and its evaluation board (BD67871MWV-EVK-003) for application development are available for online purchase from online distributors such as DigiKey and MOUSER.

ROHM also offer general-purpose motor drivers (BD67870MWV-Z, BD67872MWV-Z) with the same package and pin configuration as the new product, designed for constant-voltage drive.

ROHM 12–48V brushless DC motor gate driver TriC3 From general-purpose types to the value-added types featuring the new TriC3™, we offer a comprehensive product lineup to supports a wide variety of applications and use cases. We are committed to contributing to improved motor efficiency, enhanced application functionality, and reduced power consumption.
