Rohde & Schwarz reports that MediaTek is testing and validating TC-DFT-s-OFDM, a proposed waveform technology for 6G networks, using the CMP180 radio communication tester. This partnership highlights how important innovative test equipment is to the development of fundamental technologies for next-generation wireless communications.

As a potential candidate technology for 6G standardization, TC-DFT-s-OFDM (Trellis Coded Discrete Fourier Transform spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is being presented to 3GPP.
According to MediaTek’s research, TC-DFT-s-OFDM provides better Maximum Coupling Loss (MCL) performance for a variety of modulation orders, including advanced configurations like 16QAM.
Key Benefits of This 6G Waveform Proposed by MediaTek Include:
- Enhanced cell coverage through reduced power back-off requirements,
- Improved power efficiency through optimized power amplifier operation techniques such as Average Power Tracking (APT).
- TC-DFT-s-OFDM enables up to 4dB higher transmission power compared to traditional modulation schemes,
- Maintaining lower interference levels, implying up to 50% gain in coverage area.
This year’s Brooklyn 6G Summit, which takes place from November 5-7, will feature the partnership, showcasing industry advancements in defining technical specifications for future wireless communications. Thorough testing with advanced equipment is becoming more and more important as TC-DFT-s-OFDM moves through the 3GPP standardization process.
The CMP180 radio communication tester is a component of Rohde & Schwarz’s extensive test and measurement portfolio, which supports the advancement of wireless technologies from research to commercial deployment.
