The FiRa Consortium, an industry association devoted to developing secured fine ranging and positioning ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, has added Rias Al-Kadi, General Manager of STMicroelectronics’ Range and Connectivity Division, to its board of directors.

Building on earlier UWB improvements, ST is actively advancing the IEEE 802.15.4ab modification to increase system performance and broaden the range of applications for UWB. Significant advancements, such as centimeter-level accuracy, improved security, and lower power consumption, are anticipated as UWB standards continue to evolve.
These improvements are essential for enabling a variety of applications, ranging from digital keys and automotive access to smart home automation and IoT advancements.
An important step toward resolving implementation issues and hastening the wider deployment of UWB technology in the consumer and automotive markets would be the integration of IEEE 802.15.4ab into the CCC Digital Key ecosystem.
The appointment of Rias Al-Kadi enhances ST’s involvement in important UWB standards organizations and consortia, such as the IEEE, UWB Alliance, Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), and Connected Car Consortium (CCC).
ST supports the ongoing development of UWB technology with the goal of improving user experiences and reducing system costs, especially in consumer and automotive access applications, by strategically participating in these groups.
This is in line with ST’s goal of developing a strong UWB ecosystem that makes it possible to provide the expanding UWB market with seamless, safe, and affordable solutions.
To guarantee flawless user experiences, significant advancements in UWB requirements are resolving crucial situations like reliability when identifying a key or phone in a user’s back pocket.
The possible decrease in the number of anchors needed for vehicle access systems is another noteworthy advancement that would allow for more economical designs without sacrificing performance.
