Applied Materials and GlobalFoundries (GF) established a strategic partnership to build an innovative waveguide fabrication facility at GF Singapore in order to speed the rapidly developing AI-driven photonics industry.
In the development of photonics as a fundamental technology for next-generation AI applications, such as augmented reality (AR) and human-centric digital experiences that call for extremely effective, lightweight, and high-performance optical systems, the partnership represents a critical turning point.
With GF as its high-volume production partner in Singapore, Applied Materials will use its decades of semiconductor experience to produce waveguide components.
The partnership expands upon Singapore’s burgeoning and thriving photonics ecosystem, which includes materials, sensors, integration, assembly, testing, and applications.
