Cobra Separator, A Step-Change Innovation in Ceramic Processing from QS

THE VOLT VOTES

The successful integration of QuantumScape(QS) innovative Cobra separator technology into baseline cell production marks a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to scale up its production capacity.QuantumScape Cobra separator into baseline cell production the volt post

QS’s continuous-flow, high-throughput separator manufacturing platform is built on Cobra. Cobra is a revolutionary advancement in the production of ceramic separators, allowing for quicker, more energy-efficient production with a lower equipment footprint than previous methods.

Cobra has two significant advantages in the construction of a scalable gigafactory production line: it takes up less physical space per film start and delivers a ~25x improvement in heat treatment speed when compared to the previous generation Raptor method.

The company’s Raptor process, which produced B0 cells and yielded significant improvements in separator quality and process stability, has been replaced by the Cobra platform.

QS will continue to increase its production speed, efficiency, and scalability with Cobra as the new baseline, setting the stage for the manufacture of B1 samples in greater quantities. As the business releases new versions of Cobra, these production metrics should continue to get better.

Leadership Comments

“Our team has made impressive strides in advancing Cobra, a technology that exemplifies our progress in scaling solid-state battery production,” said Dr. Siva Sivaram, QS CEO. “By significantly improving throughput and shrinking the equipment footprint, Cobra gives us a powerful path forward for commercializing our next-generation battery technology.”QuantumScape Cobra separator into baseline cell production the volt post

“Cobra is a step-change innovation in ceramic processing, enabling a major improvement in productivity compared to Raptor — which was already a considerable advancement compared to the previous generation,” said Tim Holme, QS co-founder and CTO. “This advancement is central to bringing our high-performance solid-state battery platform to market at gigawatt scale.”
