Orbital Materials and Civo have formed a collaborative agreement to test Orbital’s carbon removal technology in a data center and promote the development of innovative data center decarbonization and efficiency solutions.
This pilot follows a series of worldwide AI policy announcements, including the UK government’s recently released AI Opportunities Action Plan.
Data centers currently account for roughly 1% of total greenhouse gas emissions. According to Morgan Stanley, the data center expansion is expected to generate around 2.5 billion tons of CO2-equivalent emissions globally by the end of 2030.
Civo will install Orbital’s carbon removal technology for data centers as part of the agreement, as well as support its efforts to create new materials and technologies to increase data center sustainability and efficiency. Orbital will get access to data centres to pilot and test these technologies.
Orbital has already achieved a 10x improvement in the performance of its carbon capture material using its AI platform, which is an order of magnitude faster than traditional development and sets new standards for carbon removal efficacy.
Orbital intends to implement and test its carbon-removable technology at Civo’s UK data center by the end of 2025. As part of the collaboration, Civo will supply Orbital with a high-performance computing cluster equipped with H200 NVIDIA GPUs to assist AI model training.

This partnership marks an impactful milestone, following a recent partnership announcement with Amazon Web Services, investment from NVentures, Nvidia’s venture capital arm, and the launch of “Orb”, its open-source AI model for designing advanced materials.
