Infineon Rolls Out New Family of GaN High-Voltage Discretes

Infineon Technologies expands its portfolio of Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices with the introduction of the CoolGaN Transistors 650 V G5, a new family of high-voltage discretes. This new product family’s target applications include renewable energy and motor drives in household appliances, as well as consumer and industrial switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) including USB-C adapters and charges, lighting, TVs, data centers, and telecom rectifiers.Infineon CoolGaN Transistors 650 V G5 High-Voltage Discretes The Volt Post

Rapid platform redesign is made possible by the new CoolGaN generation, which is intended to be a drop-in replacement for the CoolGaN Transistors 600 V G1. In focus applications, the new devices offer better figures of merit to guarantee competitive switching performance.

The CoolGaN Transistors 650 V G5 provide up to 60% better drain-source charge (Qoss), up to 60% lower gate charge (Qg), and up to 50% less energy stored in the output capacitance (Eoss) than major rivals and earlier Infineon product lines.

These characteristics work together to produce outstanding efficiency in applications involving both hard- and soft-switching. Depending on the use case, this results in a considerable reduction in power loss of 20–60% when compared to typical silicon technology.

These benefits allow the devices to operate at high frequencies with minimal power loss, resulting in superior power density. The CoolGaN Transitors 650 V G5 enable SMPS applications to be smaller and lighter or to increase the output power range in a given form factor.

There are many different RDS(on) package combinations available in the new high-voltage transistor product line. A variety of SMD packages, including ThinPAK 5×6, DFN 8×8, TOLL, and TOLT, offer ten RDS(on) classes.

High-performance 8-inch production lines in Villach, Austria, and Kulim, Malaysia, are used to make all of the goods. CoolGaN plans to switch to 12-inch manufacturing in the future. This will allow Infineon to increase its CoolGaN capacity and guarantee a strong supply chain in the GaN power industry, which Yole Group projects will grow to $2 billion by 2029.

A demo featuring the CoolGaN Transistors 650 V G5 will be showcased at electronica 2024 in Munich from November 12 to 15 (hall C3, booth 502).

Availability

The CoolGaN Transistor 650 V G5 product family can be ordered from Infineon now, and from e-commerce distributors in the coming weeks. More information is available at www.infineon.com/gan.

Infineon at electronica 2024

Infineon showcases cutting-edge solutions that are contributing to the development of an all-electric society at this year’s electronica in Munich.

In addition to enabling smarter living and sustainable structures, visitors can investigate sustainable technologies that are revolutionizing the automotive and mobility industries and fostering the development of artificial intelligence with little negative influence on the environment.

Under the theme “Driving Decarbonization and Digitalization,” the firm will showcase smart and energy-efficient solutions for the connected world of tomorrow from November 12 to 15 in Hall C3, Booth 502. Together.
