Flat Clamping Diodes Protect High-Voltage Aviation Systems

THE VOLT VOTES

AK-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS Diodes leverages an advanced foldback/snapback I-V characteristic to keep clamping voltage flat, low, and stable, even during fast transients and high-energy surges.

As aviation and eVTOL platforms rapidly migrate toward higher-voltage 270V-800V DC power architectures, engineers are hitting a familiar design wall and that is how do you protect sensitive Solid-State Power Controllers (SSPCs) from transient overvoltage without triggering a latch-up?

Littelfuse is tackling that exact bottleneck with its newly announced AK-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS Diodes.

Traditional transient voltage suppression (TVS) devices often struggle in these high-voltage environments. As surge current scales up, their clamping voltages tend to drift higher and become far less predictable.

The AK-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS Diodes bypasses this issue by leveraging an advanced foldback/snapback I-V characteristic to keep clamping voltage flat, low, and stable, even during fast transients and high-energy surges.

For design engineers, that tight transient control is a major advantage. It takes latch-up risk off the table and opens the door to using lower voltage-rated semiconductors in high-voltage circuits, fundamentally improving design efficiency and lowering costs without sacrificing protection.

The launch marks the first time Littelfuse has extended its proven FlatSuppressX technology beyond automotive systems and into high-voltage avionics.

Key Specs & Reliability

To survive the grueling demands of aerospace and defense applications, the axial-leaded diodes are built for high reliability.

  • Scalable Surge Protection: Available in 6 kA, 8 kA, and 10 kA ratings (at 8/20 µs).
  • Military-Grade Screening: 100% up-screened to MIL-STD-750 standards, running the gauntlet of vision inspection, surge testing, temperature cycling, and High-Temperature Reverse Bias (HTRB) testing.
  • Avionics Compliance: Meets RTCA DO-160 environmental qualification requirements.
  • Manufacturing Ready: Halogen-free, RoHS-compliant, Pb-free E4 terminated, and compatible with both reflow and wave soldering.

The AK-FL Series is optimized specifically for guarding DC power rails, SSPC circuits, and other vulnerable high-voltage lines in next-generation aircraft, defense power trains, and eVTOL electrical systems.

Key Comment

Littelfuse AK-FL Series FlatSuppressX TVS Diodes for eVTOL The Volt Post“The key advantage of FlatSuppressX technology is its ability to deliver a stable, low clamping voltage even under extremely high-energy surge conditions,” said Charlie Cai, Director of Product Management, Protection Business, Littelfuse. “For aviation applications, that means engineers can better protect SSPC modules and other sensitive semiconductor devices from latch-up, while meeting the reliability demands of DO-160 and MIL-STD-750 environments.”
