WBG Devices Focused Acquisition by Renesas of Transphorm Completes

The announcement was made by Renesas Electronics Corporation that the purchase of Transphorm is now complete. Now that the purchase has closed, Renesas will respond to the growing market demand for wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices by launching GaN-based power products and related reference designs right away. For WBG Devices Transphorm Now a Part of Renesas the volt post

WBG materials, which have smaller footprints than traditional silicon-based devices and greater switching frequencies than silicon carbide (SiC) and GaN, are regarded as crucial technology for next-generation power semiconductors. Here Renesas with the acquisition to foray into GaN-based power products and cater emerging markets.

The demand from electric vehicles (EVs), inverters, data center servers, artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, industrial power conversion, consumer applications, and others is likely to fuel the rapid growth of (WBG devices) both GaN and SiC-based products, over the next ten years.

“Customers instantly benefit from the new GaN products through turnkey reference designs, which integrate technologies from both companies,” said Chris Allexandre, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Power at Renesas. “Adding GaN into our portfolio also reinforces our commitment to develop products and technology that make people’s lives easier. Providing robust and sustainable power solutions that save energy, reduce cost and minimize environmental impacts does just that.”

A key component of Renesas’ plan for attaining steady, long-term growth is its investment in the power business especially for WBG devices.

Renesas has also recently ramped up a new SiC production line at the Takasaki Factory, opened the Kofu Factory, a 300-mm wafer fab dedicated to power products, and forged an agreement with Wolfspeed to secure a steady supply of SiC wafers over the next ten years in order to further strengthen this market segment.

Renesas is prepared to provide more complete power solutions, WBG devices to meet the changing demands of clients across a wide variety of applications now that GaN technology is a part of its offering.

Renesas announced 15 new Winning Combinations, market-ready reference designs that integrate the new GaN technologies, WBG devices with the company’s embedded processor, power, connectivity, and analog portfolios, on the same day that it concluded the purchase of Transphorm. These include the 3-in-1 powertrain solutions for EVs and the automotive-grade GaN technology incorporated by Transphorm for on-board battery chargers.

Some Examples Are:

Transphorm, a California startup founded in 2007 in Goleta, with origins in both the Wide Bandgap business and the University of California, Santa Barbara. The company is based on innovative technological entrepreneurship. Transphorm, a pioneer in the field of GaN semiconductors, develops, produces, and markets high-reliability, high-performance GaN power solutions for a wide range of high-voltage power conversion uses.
