Microchip Expands Space Portfolio Rollsout 15W DC-DC Power Converter

Space-grade components have long been needed for traditional space applications in order to ensure mission success. With more than 60 years of space experience, Microchip Technology is expanding its space portfolio. Now, it introduces the SA15-28, an off-the-shelf radiation-hardened DC-DC 15W power converter that complies with MIL-STD-461 specifications and comes with a companion SF100-28 EMI filter.Microchip SA15-28 space portfolio with MIL-STD-461 Specs the volt post

Operating from a 28V satellite bus in challenging conditions, this space-grade power device is a conventional, non-hybrid DC-DC isolated power converter with a companion electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter.

The SA15-28 has 5V triple outputs, which are ideal for powering FPGAs and MPUs using low-dropout linear regulators and point-of-load converters.

The small-form-factor SA15-28 maximizes the device’s Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) by weighing 60 grams and measuring roughly 1.68 cu inches. On request, Microchip can alter the output voltage combinations.

Several power converters with a total output power of up to 100W can be used with the SF100-28 EMI noise suppression filter. The SA15-28 and SF100-28 are completely compatible with Microchip’s current SA50 series of power converters and SF200 filter, providing further versatility in space applications.

High performance and reliability are essential for power management systems functioning in challenging conditions. The SA15-28 DC-DC power converter has a radiation tolerance of up to 100 krad TID and is made to function in a broad temperature range, from -55°C to +125°C.

By offering proven off-the-shelf devices, Microchip enables customers to confidently scale their designs and reduce manufacturing delays.

This scalable approach enables customers to upgrade from Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) to space-qualified level or from Radiation-Hardened By Design (RHBD) to sub-QML packaging options in ceramic or plastic.

Leadership Comments

“Microchip’s space-grade portfolio with the new SA15-28 power converter and SF100-28 EMI filter allows our customers to customize and scale their space power systems to meet the specifications of their application,” said Leon Gross, corporate vice president of Microchip’s high-reliability and RF business unit. “The non-hybrid or discrete component-based construction is specifically designed to enable flexibility and faster time to market.”

Development Tools
