The BMW Neue Klasse E/E architecture is built for scalability and easy upgrades. It taps Infineon’s lineup of AURIX and TRAVEO microcontrollers, BRIGHTLANE Ethernet, OPTIREG power ICs, and PROFET smart switches/eFuses.

Infineon Technologies is playing a pivotal role in BMW Group’s Neue Klasse platform, the next-gen architecture that’s redefining electric mobility through electrification, digitalization, and sustainability.
Infineon’s tech powers a flexible, future-proof electrical/electronic (E/E) setup that delivers reliable computing, blazing-fast data connectivity, and smart power management for safer, smarter vehicles.
They’ll showcase the first BMW Neue Klasse model, the BMW iX3, at their Annual General Meeting on February 19.
Future-Proof Vehicle Design
The BMW Neue Klasse E/E architecture is built for scalability and easy upgrades.
It taps Infineon’s lineup of AURIX and TRAVEO microcontrollers, BRIGHTLANE Ethernet, OPTIREG power ICs, and PROFET smart switches/eFuses.
By separating software from hardware, BMW can roll out over-the-air (SOTA) updates and new features without touching the physical components keeping pace with customer needs and regulations.
“Heart of Joy” – Smarter Driving Dynamics
At the center are four high-performance “Superbrains.” The star is the “Heart of Joy”, a single supercomputer handling acceleration, braking, and steering.
Powered by Infineon’s latest AURIX TC4D microcontroller and linked via high-speed BRIGHTLANE Ethernet, it slashes latency for smoother, more responsive handling. Bonus: Optimized energy recuperation boosts the vehicle’s range significantly.
The other Superbrains cover automated driving, infotainment, and core vehicle ops. Three Zone Control Units (ZCUs) also Infineon-powered streamline data and power flow, while endpoint ECUs manage essentials like traction inverters, batteries, and onboard charging.
Lighter, Smarter, More Efficient
Zonal architecture cuts complexity: The iX3’s wiring harness is 600 meters shorter and 30% lighter than before. Infineon’s PROFET Wire Guard eFuses replace up to 150 traditional fuses, enabling software-driven power management.
They dynamically cut power to unused systems (during charging, driving, or parking), boosting efficiency by about 20%.
Infineon’s SDV Leadership
Infineon makes clean, safe, smart cars possible and they’re all-in on centralized E/E architectures for software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
As the global automotive semiconductor leader since 2020, they just strengthened their edge by acquiring Marvell’s automotive Ethernet business in August 2025.
Ethernet is key for the low-latency comms that power autonomous driving and OTA updates.
Key Comment
“We are proud to collaborate with BMW Group to shape the future of mobility,” said Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon Technologies AG. “BMW Group’s Neue Klasse marks a significant step in introducing software-defined vehicles to the market and elevates individual mobility to the next level in terms of decarbonization and digitalization. We support the vision of a new software-defined platform with comprehensive expertise and cutting-edge technology.”
