Recently, Chennai-based EV startup Raptee Energy turned heads with its maiden and probably the industry-first ‘See-Through Version’ of its concept electric motorcycle at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Tamil Nadu. Also, the stellar EV 2-wheeler startup aims to make its electric 2-wheeler operate through CCS2 – fast charging stations. In this exclusive interview with Niloy; Dinesh Arjun, Co-Founder and CEO, of Raptee Energy, traverses across the company’s competitive edge, the role of solid-state batteries, expansion plans, and his own experience of working with TESLA and how did it shape Dinesh’s entrepreneurial journey. How does the company ensure that its product-line motorcycles can benefit from existing fast chargers in the country?  

The electric 2-wheeler is designed and built around a high-voltage powertrain. This makes us the only electric 2-wheeler that can access the CCS2 – fast charging stations across the country which until now was only available for electric cars.
We have also incorporated an On onboard charging system that enables the e-bike to connect with any public charging station & ensure fast and safe charging.

How does Raptee maintain its competitive edge in meeting and surpassing battery testing standards amidst rapid advancements in EV technology?

To remain at the forefront of the industry amidst the fast-paced evolution of EV technology, Raptee strategically invests in cutting-edge testing infrastructure, collaborates closely with reputable research institutions, and actively shapes forthcoming testing standards.
This proactive approach ensures our ability to consistently exceed regulatory requirements and stay ahead of emerging technological trends.

In light of the changing landscape, do you anticipate solid-state batteries playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of electric vehicles in India? How is your company preparing to embrace these technological advancements?

Certainly! Solid-state batteries hold immense potential to transform India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector by alleviating range anxiety, facilitating quicker charging, and enhancing safety standards. Their higher energy density can notably mitigate range concerns, making EVs more viable for daily use. Additionally, their rapid charging capabilities and enhanced safety features could foster greater public acceptance. India’s emphasis on “Make in India” presents an opportunity to lead in solid-state battery technology, attracting investments, generating employment, and fostering a robust EV ecosystem. To embrace this technological shift, Raptee Energy is actively investing in research and development, forging partnerships, and staying abreast of advancements in solid-state battery technology to ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation in the EV market.

How does your electric mobility company plan to drive growth through its marketing and business strategy? What specific initiatives are being implemented to broaden your market reach?

Raptee Energy’s growth strategy is structured. To begin with is the establishment of two physical stores in Chennai and Bangalore. Raptee Energy also plans to expand further based on insights gained.
These experience centres are meticulously designed to reflect our brand narrative and ethos, ensuring that whether interacting with us online or offline, consumers are fully immersed in our brand experience.
Through this approach, we aim to not only establish a strong market presence but also to cultivate lasting relationships with our customers, driving growth and loyalty in the electric mobility sector.

Dinesh, what it was like working at Tesla and what experience you’ve gained in the entrepreneurial?process? ?

I joined Tesla when they weren’t in great shape financially. They had just fired 7000 people the week before I joined. Despite that, the morale in the company was super high. Never have I ever before or since seen everyone in the company, whatever position they were in, be so committed to a singular goal.
I’ve managed production lines and have mopped them too at Tesla. And this was normal. If something needs to be done, you roll up your sleeves and get it done. And that was one of my biggest takeaways from Tesla. Doesn’t matter what position you hire for, you never settle for pure “strategists”. Everyone needs to be able to roll up their sleeves and hustle if required.

Lastly, Dinesh when can we expect the “Zooming” of Raptee e-bikes on Indian roads??

Raptee Energy is indeed gearing up for the launch of our maiden electric 2-wheeler.
We expect to roll out our electric 2-wheeler in the following quarter. We will start with deliveries in Chennai and then Bangalore before we expand pan India by the end of the year.
