Ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging in grid-constrained areas is now possible thanks to the successful deployment of a power boosting and management product by the New York Power Authority (NYPA).
In order to support the State’s ambitious clean energy strategy, ZOOZ Power, the winner of the Governor’s 2022 New York-Israel Smart Energy Innovation Challenge, worked with NYPA to develop the cutting-edge charging device that integrates energy storage and management technology.
When ZOOZ representatives visited the U.S. in September as part of an Israel group taking part in renewable energy negotiations, they celebrated the project’s energization during Climate Week NYC.
In areas where the grid has limited electricity, ZOOZ’s kinetic power booster supplies extra power to EV fast chargers, enabling ultra-rapid charging.
The company’s ground-breaking flywheel technology offers a safe and sustainable power boosting solution by using unique energy management skills and storing electricity as kinetic energy.

The Israel Smart Energy Association (ISEA) and NYPA collaborated to launch the 2022 New York-Israel Smart Energy Innovation Challenge. It urged Israeli-based new energy inventors to create a product that might support New York’s clean energy and environment goals.
In addition to receiving a $1 million award, ZOOZ was given the chance to collaborate with NYPA on a device that would effectively connect a local power grid with an EV fast charger that was strengthened by the company’s power booster.
New York-Israel Energy Innovations
In early 2020, the Power Authority and ISEA issued the first NYPA-Israel Smart Energy Challenge to solicit start-up technologies from companies headquartered in Israel that support New York’s clean energy transition.
The competition sought proposals from Israeli companies with expertise in energy efficiency and clean energy generation that wanted to work with New York’s public utility to scale up their technology in pilot demonstration projects to meet the specific needs of power utilities operations. Prisma Photonics, based in Tel-Aviv, won that competition and is currently working with NYPA on a real-time transmission line issue detection system that will help improve grid safety, security, and reliability.
In further collaborations, NYPA is working with Israeli companies mPrest, Brenmiller Energy, and SIGA OT in a number of fields, with a focus on cyber and physical security.
Leading monitoring and control system vendor mPrest helped NYPA create a first-of-its-kind monitoring system to spot system problems at NYPA’s transmission assets and power projects throughout the state before they become serious.
In order to improve system energy efficiency on a State University of New York campus, Brenmiller Energy is working with NYPA to test the application of thermal energy storage with combined heat and power systems. In order to boost grid cybersecurity, safety, and dependability, SIGA OT offers sensors and analytics.
