VIAVI Solutions has announced its partcipation in the Mobile Radio for Railway Networks in Europe 2 (MORANE-2) project, which will test Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) specifications in real-world scenarios and pave the road for digital railway communication. VIAVI, is a major company focusing on railway test and monitoring solutions, and is one of just a few monitoring suppliers to the MORANE-2 project.
The present Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) is scheduled to be phased down by 2030, with FRMCS emerging as a clear successor. VIAVI’s EVOIA Drive Test will be utilized to assist with the deployment of the new FRMCS network.
Furthermore, EVOIA Assure will monitor and evaluate FRMCS prototypes in both laboratory settings and on railway tracks to guarantee they satisfy the changing needs of existing and future rail networks. This includes support for ECTS, ATO, and real-time data and video services.
MORANE-2 is anticipated to last 34 months, from 2024 to 2027, with the goal of validating product development standards.
The project will enable the inclusion of FRMCS specifications in the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI), which defines the technical and operational standards that each subsystem, or part of a subsystem, must meet in order to satisfy essential requirements and ensure railway system interoperability.
The MORANE-2 project, a collaborative European initiative funded by Europe’s Rail (EU-RAIL) and the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertakings, is a significant step toward modernizing European railway telecommunications by improving efficiency, sustainability, and digital connectivity.
VIAVI has exhibited its reliable test, measurement, and monitoring solutions at various events. In the railway sector, this included delivering a presentation at the 2024 UIC (International Union of Railways) FRMCS Global Conference in Paris and debuting as an exhibitor at InnoTrans, the world’s largest railway show.
The VIAVI Mission Critical and Railway team will hold its annual Railway User Group in Stockholm from June 3-5. The VIAVI team will also attend the 5×5: The Public Safety Innovation Summit on June 3-5 in Seattle, as well as TCCA Critical Communications World 2025 on June 17-19 in Brussels.
VIAVI is a member of UNIFE, the European association that represents the rail supply industry and promotes innovation, sustainability, and standardization in railway systems.
