VIAVI, OSA To Develop Open Source Software for 5G, O-RAN, 6G

VIAVI is now a member of OpenAirInterface Software Alliance(OSA) to together innovate in open-source software for 4G and 5G networks. A transition to multivendor open RAN solutions for compatibility with the O-RUs.

Viavi Solutions declared that it has become a member of the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA) strategic board.VIAVI OSA Develops Open Source Software for 5G, O-RAN, 6G the volt post

By participating, VIAVI starts a new chapter in OSA’s connection with the O-RAN ALLIANCE and the open RAN stakeholders and brings a test equipment vendor to the board. This is also a major turning point for the advancement of open-source projects in the telecom sector.

Recognized for its innovative work in developing open-source software for 4G and 5G networks, OpenAirInterface (OAI) has lately taken the lead in facilitating the transition to multivendor open RAN solutions by offering its O-CU and O-DU software for compatibility with the O-RUs from the industry partners.

This collaboration with VIAVI is intended to considerably enhance this role, which is seen in O-RAN plugfests and other reference design demonstrations, as the software of a professional testing business can be continuously exploited to improve the quality of the OAI open source components.

Honored for its innovative efforts in creating open-source software for 4G and 5G networks, OpenAirInterface (OAI) has recently assumed the initiative in streamlining the switch to multivendor open RAN solutions by providing its O-CU and O-DU software for industry partners’ O-RU compatibility.

As demonstrated by O-RAN plugfests and other reference design demonstrations, this role will be significantly enhanced by the relationship with VIAVI because the professional testing company’s software may be continuously used to raise the caliber of the OAI open-source components.

VIAVI is welcomed by OSA as a significant asset to its goal of encouraging innovation and teamwork in the creation of next-generation wireless technology.

Being a leading player in network testing, monitoring, and assurance solutions on a global scale, VIAVI provides the OpenAirInterface community with unmatched resources and experience.

VIAVI’s dedication to developing network technologies is in perfect harmony with the Alliance’s objectives, which include encouraging standards-based methods, openness, and interoperability in the telecommunications sector said its official release.

With VIAVI’s assistance, OpenAirInterface hopes to hasten the creation and use of open-source 5G network solutions, promoting increased flexibility, scalability, and affordability in the global deployment of wireless infrastructure.

“VIAVI is excited to partner with OSA in advancing the state-of-the-art open source software for 5G/O-RAN/6G networks,” said Dr. Ian Wong, Director of RF and Wireless Architecture at VIAVI and co-chair of the Test and Integration Focus Group at the O-RAN ALLIANCE.  “As a leader in the test and optimization of 5G/O-RAN/6G networks, we strongly believe in the power of open source software in democratizing the research and development of next-generation wireless networks, enabling rapid innovation through experimentation and exploration, and have found in OSA the ideal partner in taking this to the next level, especially in the era of AI/ML, disaggregation, and openness in 6G.”

“OSA believes that the maturity of the OAI CU/DU stack and other software like the OAI FlexRIC will benefit greatly from continuous testing with the highest quality third-party test equipment from VIAVI,” said Raymond Knopp, President OSA. “End-to-end wireless blueprints deployed in Open RAN labs need both open source components and quality testing gear to serve the 5G/6G needs of research and industry communities. This is where our partnership with VIAVI is both timely and invaluable.”
