Microchip Turnkey VelocityDRIVE Software Platform for In-Vehicle Ethernet Networking

Microchip Technology announces its new family of LAN969x Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Switches and VelocityDRIVE Software Platform (SP), a turnkey Ethernet switch software solution and Configuration Tool (CT) based on standardized YANG models, in order to offer OEMs complete Ethernet solutions.Microchip VelocityDRIVE in-vehicle Ethernet Switch Software The Volt Post

The Growing Demand for Ethernet Solutions Among Automotive OEMs

Automotive OEMs are moving to Ethernet solutions due to the requirement for more bandwidth, sophisticated functionality, improved security, and standardization. Automotive Ethernet centralizes control, allowing for variable configurations and real-time data transfer, hence providing the infrastructure required to support Software-Defined Networking.

An innovative industry-standard network configuration solution is provided by the combination of Microchip LAN969x devices and VelocityDRIVE SP, the first integration of CORECONF YANG in the industry. Through the separation of software development from the hardware network layer, the CORECONF YANG standard seeks to empower designers. This shortens the time to market and lowers expenses and complexity.

A 1 GHz single-core Arm® Cortex®-A53 CPU powers the high-performance LAN969x, which have multi-gigabit capabilities and scalable bandwidths ranging from 46 Gbps to 102 Gbps. To satisfy the exact time and reliability needs of applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) the Advanced Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) was developed.

The ASIL B Functional Safety and AEC-Q100 Automotive Qualification requirements are supported by the LAN969x switch family, which provides excellent security and reliability for automotive applications. The devices provide quick and safe boot capabilities that use internal ECC SRAM for code execution, removing the need for costly external DDR memory. They are also suited for systems with a tiny embedded-memory footprint.

As in-vehicle networking continues to increase, software solutions like VelocityDRIVE SP are necessary for customers to configure and manage their networking systems. The LAN969x switch family joins Microchip’s portfolio of automotive Ethernet solutions, which includes 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps PHY transceivers, controllers, switches and endpoints.

Development Tools

The LAN969x devices are supported by the LAN9692 VelocityDRIVE Evaluation Board and VelocityDRIVE Configuration Tool (CT).
