TEXMiN Secures Third Place for Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques

TEXMiN, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, have placed third in the Geological Survey of India’s (GSI) prestigious Hackathon 2024, which focused on “Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques for Mineral Prospectivity Mapping,” a platform for developing ground-breaking solutions in mineral exploration through advanced geophysical data interpretation, multi-dataset integration, and AI/ML applications.Geological Survey of India (GSI) TEXMiN, IIT ISM Dhanbad the volt post 1

The TEXMiN team is working on a project that uses AI/ML techniques to map the mineral prospectivity of Jharkhand and surrounding areas using geospatial data provided by GSI and the Ministry of Mines via the National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR).

The team worked on a variety of datasets, including geological, geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing information, covering a difficult 14,780 sq. km area in southern Rajasthan.

On January 19, 2025, at the 64th Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) Meeting 2025, the hackathon findings were revealed. Prominent dignitaries such as Dr. Joyesh Bagchi (Additional Director General, GSI), Shri Asit Saha (DG, GSI), Shri Sanjay Lohiya (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mines), Shri V. L. Kantha Rao (Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Chairman, CGWB), and Shri Deb Kumar Bhattacharya (Deputy Director General, GSI) graced the award ceremony.

Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad & Chairman, Hub Governing Board, TEXMiN, was a special invitee to the event. The award was presented by the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, who lauded the TEXMiN team’s efforts in developing innovative AI/ML-based solutions for mineral exploration. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to advance mineral exploration technologies and set the direction for future initiatives.
