Telesat has been using Rohde & Schwarz’s advanced testing equipment to improve the service connection design of its Telesat Lightspeed LEO network. Telesat Lightspeed intends to transform global satellite connection by offering ubiquitous, low-cost, high-capacity links at fibre-like speeds, with global service expected by the end of 2027.

Modern signal generators, spectrum, and signal analyzers are critical measurement tools for next-generation Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks. Rohde & Schwarz’s superior measuring technology is critical for developing and testing the Telesat Lightspeed integrated satellite and terrestrial network.
R&S has announced improved measurement choices across its testing equipment portfolio to satisfy the specific needs of advanced, next-generation satellite networks.

Telesat employs the Rohde & Schwarz signal generator R&S SMW and spectrum and signal analyzer R&S FSW to qualify and evaluate new RF chipsets and satellite modems from various suppliers.
The instruments are used to test receiver chipsets, as well as to evaluate and verify modem performance across numerous waveforms, most notably DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2. These one-of-a-kind testing tools ensure the Telesat Lightspeed constellation’s greatest data throughput rates remain consistent and reliable.
The collaboration with Telesat resulted in new product developments to facilitate the testing of advanced Telesat Lightspeed network features such as Beam Hopping and Superframe, as well as DVB-RCS2 with bigger return channels than previously possible in satellite network installations.
Rohde & Schwarz’s enhanced features support not only the development and testing of Telesat Lightspeed satellites’ onboard processors, but also the entire Telesat ecosystem, including modem and chipset makers.
