New ST ToF Sensor Designed for Robust Environments, Tweaks Proximity Detection

The VL53L4ED single-zone Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor, which has an increased operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C, is now exclusively launched by STMicroelectronics. The VL53L4ED, designed for robust environments, improves proximity detection and range in high ambient light conditions for robot guidance systems, industrial tools, smart-factory equipment, outdoor lighting controls, and security systems.ST VL53L4ED ToF Sensor For High Proximity Detection the volt post

The VL53L4ED, which adds to ST’s VL53L4 family of direct-ToF sensors, flaunts a laser emitter and a single-photon avalanche-diode (SPAD) detector array in an easy all-in-one module, guaranteeing accurate measurement even at the most severe temperatures. The next-generation laser offers superior short-distance ranging accuracy and improved performance in high ambient light environments.

Furthermore, a processor included in the sensors enables power-saving autonomous operation and lowers demand for host-system resources.

The new ToF sensor from ST offers high-precision distance measurement throughout the whole field of view and the whole increased temperature range to objects up to 1150mm away. Under high ambient light conditions, precise distance measurement is possible up to 800mm with special settings.

These new sensor allows ranging frequency up to 100Hz and retains linearity in distance measurement down to 1mm.

STM32Cube Ecosystem X-CUBE-TOF1 Expanded Software Package

The STM32Cube ecosystem’s X-CUBE-TOF1 expanded software package allows developers to accelerate projects utilizing the VL53L4 sensor family. The STSW-IMG034 driver, which enables an interrupt command to convert the VL53L4ED or VL53L4CD  into an ultra-low-power proximity detector for user detection, system activation, and touchless control, is also included in the ready-to-use software.

In addition, code samples for liquid-level monitoring are included in the STSW-IMG039 software pack. Hardware includes the SATEL-VL53L4ED  breakout board for prototyping and the X-NUCLEO-53L4A3 extension board for the NUCLEO-F401RE microcontroller board, which makes it easier to execute code samples and build quick applications.

Availability and Pricing

The sensors are pin-compatible and offered in a 4.4mm x 2.4mm x 1mm-high LGA package. The new VL53L4ED is in production now, priced from $2.3 for 4500 pieces.
