Use ST’s New Auto Grade Driver With Range of External MOSFETs

STMicroelectronics’ L99H92 automotive gate driver has two more current-sense amplifiers for system monitoring, a charge pump, safety features, and an SPI interface for programming and diagnostics.STMicroelectronics L99H92 Automotive Gate Driver the volt post

The L99H92 automotive gate driver, which has two high-side and two low-side drivers, is said to power one bidirectional DC motor with a single H-bridge or two unidirectional motors with two half bridges.

The highly integrated and readily programmable driver is commonly used in sliding doors, powered trunks, electric sunroofs, window lifts, and seat belt pre-tensioners.

As the vehicle battery voltage varies, the charge pump fuels the high-side drivers to ensure proper performance, allowing the outputs to work with a supply as low as 5.41V. An extra pin can also be used to operate a MOSFET for reverse-battery protection using the charge-pump output.

Through the SPI interface, the gate-driving current may be controlled, enabling slew-rate control to reduce heat dissipation and electromagnetic emissions.

Up to four external discrete components per MOSFET—typically required for slew-rate tuning with traditional drivers—can be saved by programming the current.

Designers may utilize the driver with a broad range of external MOSFETs, including high-power devices with substantial gate capacitance, thanks to its maximum driving current of 170mA.

The L99H92 is Designed:

  • Dependability and safety.
  • Several features for system protection and diagnostics.
  • Tracking the MOSFET drain current.
  • A configurable threshold is used for overcurrent protection.
  • Safety and effectiveness are further guaranteed by programmed dead time and cross-conduction prevention.
  • Additional safeguards include open-load and output short-circuit detection in off-state diagnostic mode.
  • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection for analog and digital power supply inputs, and early warning and shutdown for overheating.

Without waiting for recurring SPI transfers, a dedicated diagnostic pin offers rapid problem warning and a fail-safe input has the ability to instantly turn off all MOSFETs.

Additionally, two current-sense amplifiers are integrated for system-status monitoring, helping minimize the bill of materials. Suitable for high-side, low-side, and inline sensing, the amplifiers have independently programmable gain, low offset, and low thermal drift. They can be independently disabled to reduce current consumption when unused.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The L99H92 is in production now and packaged as a TQFP32 or QFN32 with wettable flanks to facilitate inspection. Pricing starts from $1.7062 in the QFN32 package and $1.7246 in TQFP32 package, for orders of 1000 pieces.
