Sony Unveils IMX927: 105MP Global Shutter at 100 FPS

Sony Semiconductor has pushed the boundaries of imaging technology once again with the launch of the IMX927, a groundbreaking high-resolution, high-speed image sensor.Sony IMX927 global shutter sensor for industrial imaging

Designed primarily for industrial applications, this innovative sensor combines a remarkable 105-megapixel resolution with an impressive frame rate of up to 100 frames per second, setting a new benchmark in the imaging industry.

The IMX927 is a Type 2.5 backside-illuminated CMOS sensor featuring Sony’s proprietary Pregius S global shutter technology. Measuring 39.7mm diagonally, the sensor is slightly more compact than a typical full-frame sensor but stands out with its perfect square aspect ratio of 10,272 by 10,272 pixels.

This unique combination of high resolution and fast frame rate is made possible by Sony’s advanced pixel structure and the optimization of the sensor drive and analog-to-digital converter, which enables high-speed image data output while conserving power.

Sony emphasizes that this sensor is tailored for industrial use, particularly in areas where precision and speed are paramount, such as semiconductor and flat-panel display inspections.Sony IMX927 global shutter sensor for industrial imaging

The sensor’s ability to capture distortion-free, low-noise images of both small and large targets positions it as an indispensable tool for machine vision cameras aimed at improving measurement and inspection accuracy across diverse industrial applications.

While the IMX927 is unlikely to appear in consumer electronics in its current form, it offers a glimpse into the future of imaging technology that might one day benefit consumer-level cameras.

The sensor supports multiple bit depths—8, 10, and 12-bit—and can deliver frame rates of 112, 102, and 73 frames per second respectively. Additionally, it is available in both monochrome and Bayer color filter array versions, providing versatility for different industrial imaging needs.

At the heart of its performance lies a compact pixel size of just 2.74 micrometers, leveraging Sony’s back-illuminated and stacked pixel design to maximize sensitivity and saturation capacity.

These features ensure that despite its high resolution, the sensor maintains excellent image quality in demanding industrial environments.Sony IMX927 global shutter sensor for industrial imaging

Sony’s IMX927 is set to enhance productivity and precision in industries where accurate visual inspection is critical, and it reinforces Sony Semiconductor’s position at the forefront of image sensor innovation.

This new sensor exemplifies how high technology in industrial imaging continues to evolve, promising improved measurement and inspection processes across a broad range of applications.
