According to ROHM, Murata Power Solutions, a division of the Murata Manufacturing Group and a top supplier of electronic components, batteries, and power supplies in Japan, has chosen to use the ROHM EcoGaN series of 650V GaN HEMTs in the TOLL package for AI server power supplies.
Greater efficiency and compactness are achieved by integrating ROHM GaN HEMTs, which combine low loss operation with high-speed switching capability, in the 5.5kW AI server power supply unit from Murata Power Solutions. This power supply unit is scheduled to go into mass production in 2025.
Global data traffic has increased recently due to the quick development of IoT-related disciplines like artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR). The need for more effective AI power sources is highlighted by the fact that a single AI-generated response is projected to consume many times as much power as a typical Internet search.
In the meantime, GaN devices—which are renowned for their high-speed switching capabilities and low ON resistance—are drawing interest due to their capacity to increase power supply efficiency while decreasing the size of peripheral parts like inductors utilized in power circuits.
