The BD1423xFVJ-C and the BD1422xG-C are two new high precision current sense amps from ROHM. The AEC-Q100 automotive reliability standard qualifies them. With input voltages up to +80V, the BD1423xFVJ-C series, which is available in the TSSOP-B8J package, is perfect for high-voltage applications including electric compressors, 48V DC-DC converters, backup power sources, and auxiliary batteries. The three models in the series—BD14230FVJ-C, BD14231FVJ-C, and BD14232FVJ-C—have varying gain settings.
The BD1422xG-C, which comes in the small SSOP6 packaging, can handle input voltages of up to +40V for lower voltage applications. This makes them appropriate for space-saving automotive applications such overcurrent prevention and current monitoring in 5V/12V power supply networks used in the drivetrain and body domains. This series has three distinct gain options: BD14220G-C, BD14221G-C, and BD14222G-C, just as its high-voltage version.
The growing popularity of electric vehicles has led to a growing use of 48V systems in the automobile industry in addition to traditional 5V/12V power sources in recent years. Furthermore, high-accuracy current sensing is becoming more and more important as vehicle functionality advances and the requirement for accurate monitoring and control across a wide range of applications grows.
A current sensing amp amplifies the miniscule voltage drop across a shunt resistor to measure the current passing through a circuit in an indirect manner. For system control and monitoring, the amplified signal is subsequently routed to an ADC or comparator.
By utilizing established analog expertise, ROHM’s automotive-grade current sensing amplifiers satisfy market demands. This improves safety and dependability in automotive applications, especially electric vehicles, by enabling high-accuracy current sensing that is compatible with both negative and high voltage conditions.
By combining the majority of existing sensor circuitry—which is usually made up of discrete components and an operational amplifier—into a single package, these new solutions achieve increased space efficiency.
As a result, a shunt resistor can be connected to monitor current. Additionally, the devices include a two-stage amplifier architecture, with an auto-zero amplifier at the output and a chopper amplifier at the input. Stable, accurate current sensing (±1%) is ensured via internal resistor matching for gain setting, which also reduces the impact of temperature changes.
Additionally, even with the addition of an external RC filter circuit for noise reduction, current detection accuracy is preserved, greatly lowering design complexity and development time. Other characteristics include reverse connection, negative voltage input, and a -14V negative voltage tolerance that supports back electromotive force.
Going forward, ROHM will continue to deliver optimal solutions that contribute to higher precision and enhanced reliability in automotive equipment.
