The first airport in the world to routinely use walk-through scanners for passenger security checks is Frankfurt. The Rohde & Schwarz QPS Walk2000 air travel security system has been approved for widespread deployment by the German Federal Police after a test phase that lasted almost a year at Terminal 1’s Concourse A.
With the QPS Walk2000, travellers can move through the scanner at their normal pace rather than freezing in an awkward position for scanning, which greatly increases comfort and convenience during security inspections.
This checkpoint sees over 18,000 departing passengers per day. It is anticipated that this technology will be implemented in the upcoming Terminal 3 as well as expanded to include more security check lanes in Terminal 1.
While an avatar locates potentially hazardous things in real time, the QPS Walk2000 scanners’ millimeter-wave technology also penetrates clothing. Instead of having to thoroughly rescan the passenger in the event that an alarm is set off, security staff can concentrate on the designated area.
Since assuming control of Frankfurt Airport’s aviation security checks, Fraport has spent over 22 million euros outfitting the security checkpoints with cutting-edge CT technology and innovative lane designs.
Fraport is in charge of overseeing the security inspections. Fraport has been in charge of setting up, overseeing, and running Frankfurt Airport’s approximately 160 security lanes since January 1, 2023.
Among other things, the German Federal Police are still in charge of establishing general standards related to aviation security, offering the necessary technical and legal oversight, guaranteeing overall aviation security, supplying armed checkpoint protection, authorizing new inspection tools, and certifying and recertifying airport security screeners.
Key Comments
“We’re the world’s first airport to set a new standard of passenger security with this 360° walk-through scanner,” says Alexander Laukenmann, head of Fraport AG’s aviation division. “During the test phase we worked closely with the German Federal Police to optimize its operation and pave the way for its certification. This is part of our ongoing efforts to improve the passenger experience by using the latest technologies to make checkpoints faster and easier to navigate while upholding our high standard of security. A special thank you goes to the whole project team.”
Andreas Haegele, Vice President Microwave Imaging at Rohde & Schwarz, stated: “The very successful joint testing and evaluation of the walk-through scanner by the Federal Police and Fraport at Frankfurt Airport are an example of excellent collaboration by all of the involved parties. We’re very proud to be contributing to an advanced, innovative and globally new approach for screening passengers at airports.”
