The RZ/T2H, Renesas Electronics’ top-performing microprocessor (MPU) for industrial equipment, was introduced. The RZ/T2H can drive industrial robot motors for up to nine axes at high speed and high precision because of its robust application processing and real-time performance.
Industrial Ethernet on a single chip is one of the many network communications protocols it supports. Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motion controllers, distributed control systems (DCSs), and computerized numerical controls (CNCs) are examples of industrial controller equipment that the MPU targets.
Industrial robots, such as vertically articulated robots, and industrial controller equipment are being used to speed up automated production in response to the increased need for unmanned and labor-saving manufacturing.
All of the performance and functionality needed to create these applications are combined in the Renesas RZ/T2H MPU.
The RZ/T2H MPU can now fulfill all the criteria on a single chip, whereas in the past, industrial systems needed many MPUs or a mix of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to control these applications.
This lowers the amount of components and saves FPGA program development time and money.
High-Performance Application Processing and Fast Real-Time Control on a Single Chip
Four Arm Cortex-A55 application CPUs with a maximum operating frequency of 1.2 GHz are included with the RZ/T2H. It is compatible with 32-bit LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM for external memory.
The real-time processing is handled by two Cortex-R52 CPUs with a maximum operating frequency of 1 GHz. Each core has 576 KB of high-capacity tightly linked memory (TCM).
This makes it possible to do CPU- and memory-intensive activities on a single chip, including running Linux applications, creating robot trajectories, and processing PLC sequences. Simultaneously, the RZ/T2H is capable of handling real-time control tasks such industrial Ethernet protocol processing and motor control with speed and accuracy.
Motor control of up to 9 axes reduces component costs and development time
The Renesas RZ/T2H provides precise and fast control over up to nine axis servo motors in industrial robots.
Everything needed for up to nine axes of motor control is included with the RZ/T2H, including encoder interfaces (A-format™, EnDat, BiSS®, Hyperface DSL, and FA-CODER are all supported), 3-phase PWM timers, and delta-sigma interfaces for monitoring current values.
Additionally, the Cortex-R52 real-time CPU core’s Low Latency Peripheral Port (LLPP) bus houses peripheral functions for motor control, enabling high-speed access from the CPU.
Flexible support for network communications including Industrial Ethernet
In addition to an Ethernet ports, the RZ/T2H offers three Gigabit Ethernet MAC (GMAC) ports and four Ethernet ports. Additionally, it supports the next-generation Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard, OPC UA, PROFINET, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP. The MPU can support numerous Industrial Ethernet controllers and devices to the combination of these Ethernet switches and GMAC, giving it the reliablity to accommodate a variety of controller needs, including upper-layer Ethernet communications.
Specialized boards and software available for industrial robots and controllers
Like all Renesas MPUs, the RZ/T2H comes with the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP) and a Linux package with extended support. Motion Utility Tool (a motor control software tool), a multi-axis motor control software package, and inverter boards for driving nine-axis motors are all part of an unconventional multi-axis motor control evaluation solution. To get system development started, software PLC packages and industrial Ethernet protocol samples are also included.
Winning Combinations
Additionally, Renesas provides a “9-axis Industrial Motor Control with Ethernet” solution that combines the RZ/T2H with a variety of compatible devices, including the RV1S9353A Optically Isolated Delta-Sigma Modulator and the RV1S9231A IGBT Drive Photocoupler, to provide a large number of winning combinations. Technically tested system designs from devices that complement one another are combined in these winning combinations to provide a low-risk, optimized design that brings products to market more quickly.

Key Comments
“We have enjoyed outstanding market success with RZ/T2M and RZ/T2L,” said Daryl Khoo, Vice President of Embedded Processing 1st Business Division at Renesas. “The RZ/T2H builds on that momentum, allowing our industrial customers to leverage their existing design assets while addressing even more innovative, demanding industrial motor control and Linux applications. Our customers have been particularly impressed that the RZ/T2H enables them to implement a 9-axis motor control all on just one chip!”
“As industrial equipment continues to evolve, these systems increasingly require more complex functions and performance,” said Micael Borgefeldt, Product Manager at IAR Systems. “Including the latest RZ/T2H MPU from Renesas, we empower the developers to unlock flexible application configurations across 32-bit MCUs and 64-bit high-end MPUs multi-core environments. Our IAR development solution enables engineers to accelerate next-generation industrial innovation, streamlining development and boosting efficiency like never before.”
Availability
The RZ/T2H is available today. Renesas plans to release the new RZ/N2H device in Q1/2025, which offers the same performance as the RZ/T2H in a smaller package. This is ideal for industrial controller equipment such as PLCs and motion controllers.
The RZ/T2H is managed under the Product Longevity Program (PLP) for industrial equipment that requires long life cycles.
