Renesas Electronics unveiled the RAA489400 USB Type-C port controller and the RAA489118 buck-boost battery charger. A superior Extended Power Range (EPR) USB Power Delivery (PD) solution is offered by the combination of the two new ICs.

With two to seven battery cells connected in series, the RAA489118 can be used as a battery charger. It can also be used as a voltage regulator with 30V input and 30V output. The R3TM (Robust Ripple Regulator) technology, which is patented by Renesas, combines the best aspects of hysteretic and fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) technologies.
R3 modulation technology offers the best-in-class light-load efficiency for extended battery life, quick dynamic response, and acoustic noise-free operation.
An SMBus (System Management Bus) interface, which is commonly used in power tools, home appliances, and light industrial devices, is part of the RAA489118. In USB-C PD implementations, the RAA489118 can be easily integrated with the RAA489400 and other components thanks to the SMBus interface, buck-boost, and bidirectional characteristics.
It is a perfect fit for solar portable power station applications since both its input and output voltage levels match those of common solar power sources.
Up to 48V/5A of USB-PD VBUS power is supported by the RAA489400 port controller. Short-circuit protection, VBUS discharge, a VCONN MUX, dead battery support, an integrated PHY, and Sink and Source Power Path Gate Drivers with external NFETs are all included.
