The RA6W1 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 wireless microcontroller (MCU) and the RA6W2 MCU, which combines Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and Wi-Fi 6, were released by Renesas Electronics. These Wi-Fi 6 MCUs connectivity devices meet the increasing need for ultra-low-power, always-connected IoT devices for consumer, industrial, smart home, and medical applications.

Renesas also introduced completely integrated modules with pre-validated RF connectivity, wireless protocol stacks, and integrated antennas to speed up development.
Ultra-Low-Power Operation for Always-Connected IoT
In order to enhance application usability and response time, today’s IoT devices must be constantly connected while consuming as little power as possible to prolong battery life or comply with environmental requirements.
Target Wake Time (TWT), a feature of Renesas’ Wi-Fi 6 MCUs, allows for longer sleep durations without sacrificing power consumption or cloud connectivity. Real-time control, remote diagnostics, and over-the-air (OTA) updates are crucial for applications including environmental sensors, smart locks, thermostats, security cameras, and medical monitors.
Furthermore, both MCU groups are tuned for ultra-low power consumption, using less than 50µA in Delivery Traffic Indication Message (DTIM10) and as little as 200nA to 4µA in sleep mode.
These devices fulfill the increasing demands of contemporary energy efficiency standards by staying connected with less power consumption thanks to the “sleepy connected” Wi-Fi capabilities.
Scalable RA MCU Architecture with Full Software Support
The MCUs, which are based on the Arm Cortex-M33 CPU core operating at 160 MHz with 704 KB of SRAM, allow engineers to create standalone, affordable Internet of Things applications using integrated communication interfaces and analog peripherals without the need for an external MCU.
Additionally, customers can choose a host MCU from Renesas’ extensive selection of RA MCUs and add the RA6W1 and RA6W2 as networking and connection add-ons.
The Flexible Software Package (FSP) and eStudio integrated development environment from Renesas are compatible with both RA6W1 and RA6W2. They provide a scalable platform that facilitates smooth software reuse throughout the RA family as the first Wi-Fi 6 MCUs in the RA portfolio.
High Performance Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 with 2.4 and 5 GHz Connectivity
Both Wi-Fi 6 MCUs offer better throughput, less latency, and lower power consumption with support for both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
Even in settings with numerous connected devices, the dual-band capabilities ensures a solid and fast connection by dynamically choosing the best band based on current conditions.
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and TWT are examples of advanced features that improve performance and energy economy, making these solutions ideal for battery-powered devices and crowded urban environments.
Robust Security and Matter-Certified Interoperability
AES-256 encryption, secure boot, key storage, TRNG, and XiP with on-the-fly decryption are just a few of the powerful built-in security features that the RA6W1 and RA6W2 devices provide to protect data from unwanted access.
Developers may more easily future-proof their designs thanks to the RA6W1’s RED certification (Radio Equipment Directive). The gadget is also compatible with all smart home systems, Matter-ready, and certified with Matter 1.4. Through the Renesas Product Longevity Program, Renesas provides 15 years of support for MCUs and 10 years for modules.
By combining certified RF components and wireless connectivity stacks that adhere to international network standards, two types of modules—Wi-Fi 6 (RRQ61001) and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE combination (RRQ61051)— simplify design.
The United States (FCC), Canada (IC), Brazil (ANATEL), Europe (CE/RED), the United Kingdom (UKCA), Japan (Telec), South Korea (KCC), China (SRRC), and Taiwan (NCC) are among the countries that support RF certification standards. The modules greatly minimize design work and speed up time to market by including connectivity at the system level.
Key Comment
“We’re offering our customers the flexibility to design with a standalone Wi-Fi device, a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE combo, or fully integrated modules depending on their needs,” said Chandana Pairla, VP of the Connectivity Solutions Division at Renesas. “These wireless solutions save power, simplify system design and lower BOM cost. With hosted or hostless implementation options, customers can confidently begin their wireless onboarding journey and seamlessly integrate into next-generation connected systems.”
