Renesas Ultra-Low-Power RL78/L23 MCUs for Smart home Appliances

Renesas Electronics expanded its low-power RL78 family with the introduction of the new 16-bit RL78/L23 microcontroller (MCU) group. The RL78/L23 MCUs, which operate at 32MHz, supports smart home appliances, consumer electronics, the Internet of Things, and metering systems by combining industry-leading low-power performance with crucial capabilities like dual-bank flash memory, segment LCD control, and capacitive touch functionality.

The performance and power needs of contemporary display-based human-machine interface (HMI) applications are met by these compact, cost-effective devices.

Ultra-Low Power Operation with Optimized LCD Performance

The RL78/L23 is perfect for battery-powered systems that are primarily in standby mode because of its ultra-low power consumption optimization. They have a quick 1?s wake-up time to help reduce CPU activity, an active current of only 109?A/MHz, and a standby current as low as 0.365?A.

Compared to the present RL78/L1X group, the LCD controller’s new reference mode, VL4, lowers LCD operating current by about 30%.

SMS (SNOOZE Mode Sequencer), which is included with the MCUs, allows dynamic LCD segment display without the need for CPU involvement.

Through task delegation to the SMS, the devices reduce CPU wake-ups and help save power at the system level. These developments minimize their negative effects on the environment while greatly extending battery life, streamlining design, and lowering replacement prices.

With a broad operating voltage range of 1.6V to 5.5V, the RL78/L23 can be operated directly from 5V power supply, which are frequently found in industrial and household products. External voltage regulators are not as necessary because to this capacity.

The MCUs also incorporate essential parts like an internal oscillator, a temperature sensor, and capacitive touch sensing, which lowers PCB size and BOM costs.

Feature-Rich Peripherals for HMI Systems

Built to meet the ever-changing needs of the HMI market, the RL78/L23 combines a number of cutting-edge capabilities into a small, reasonably priced device. Its capacitive touch and integrated segment LCD controller enable slick, responsive user interfaces for devices like HVAC systems and induction cooktops.

Rice cookers and IH cooktops are examples of smart kitchen appliances that require accurate multi-channel heat regulation, which is made possible by the IH timer (Timer KB40).

In applications like metering, where downtime must be kept to a minimum, the devices’ dual-bank flash memory enables smooth firmware updates via FOTA (Firmware Over-the-Air), enabling continuous system operation.

One memory bank can run the user software while the other receives updates thanks to the dual-bank architecture.

This method improves reliability by maintaining system functionality during the procedure.
