New Renesas Sensor Module for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

The innovative all-in-one sensor module from Renesas Electronics is intended for indoor air quality monitoring. The first multi-sensor air quality module from Renesas, the RRH62000, accurately detects various particle sizes, volatile organic compounds, and gasses that are detrimental to human health by integrating numerous sensor characteristics in a small design.Renesas indoor air quality monitoring sensor RRH62000 the volt post

The module provides an intelligent sensor management solution for an expanding market of air monitoring applications, such as smoke detectors, air purifiers, HVAC systems, weather stations, and smart home systems, and is equipped with a Renesas microcontroller (MCU).

Additionally, because of its strong firmware, client products can adhere to several international air quality requirements.

The RRH62000 Features:

  • One of the smallest footprints in its class of sensor modules, measuring only 46.6 x 34.8 x 12 mm.
  • It packs Renesas’ RA Family MCU and seven sensor signals: the laser-based PM1/ 2.5/ 10 sensor, ZMOD4410 gas sensor, and the HS4003 humidity and temperature sensor.
  • Together, these sensors can detect particulate matter, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), estimated CO2, temperature and humidity all in one system.
  • All key components have been pre-integrated and fully calibrated at the factory, allowing developers to start their sensor system designs right out of the box.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the general public’s interest in air quality and its implications for health has grown dramatically. The impact of air pollution on respiratory health and general well-being is becoming increasingly widely recognized.

It’s less well recognized that interior pollution concentrations are normally six to 10 times higher than outdoor concentrations. These include particulates from HVAC filters, dust, paint fumes, cooking smoke, pollen, and other substances that can enter the respiratory system and harm the lungs, cause cancer, or create other health issues.

Renesas’ new sensor module is capable of monitoring a wide range of air quality conditions in order to tackle these new demands.

It can monitor concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 particulates—particles with diameters ranging from 0.3 to 10µm—as well as absolute or relative TVOC measurements in various power mode settings, offering the highest level of accuracy for these pollutants. This is made possible by the use of laser-based technology, which is more precise than traditional LED methods.

The RRH62000 provides seven sensor outputs at once, and the device can instantly identify ambient air quality data thanks to its on-board microcontroller.

Engineers can configure the sensors in the RRH62000 combo module to meet the requirements of multiple green air quality standards in public buildings, including The Well Building Standard (WELL), Home Ventilating Institute (HVI), and RESET.

HVAC systems can support demand-controlled ventilation with the help of intelligent sensor devices like the Renesas RRH62000 and the recently announced RRH46410 gas sensor module. This allows the systems to maintain optimal air quality and energy efficiency by adjusting air flow based on occupancy information and carbon dioxide levels.

Similar to this, these modules employ AI algorithms to foretell when HVAC filters need to be changed or identify an abnormality prior to a system failure, hence reducing the expense and duration of system maintenance.
