QuantumScape Corporation entered into a strategic collaboration with Murata Manufacturing to jointly explore large-scale production of the ceramic separator film critical to QuantumScape’s solid-state battery innovation.
This marks the first phase of a multi-step agreement aimed at strengthening the supply chain and scalability of QuantumScape’s proprietary solid-state battery architecture.
Leveraging Murata’s Ceramics Expertise for Energy Storage Breakthroughs
Murata brings decades of global manufacturing experience to the table, especially in the design and production of ceramic-based passive components, communication modules, and power supply modules.
As QuantumScape ramps up commercialization of its Cobra ceramic separator technology, Murata’s deep expertise in precision ceramics is expected to play a pivotal role in enabling consistent, scalable, and high-quality manufacturing.
“Murata’s deep expertise in high-precision ceramics manufacturing makes them an exceptional partner as we look to scale production of our proprietary ceramic separator,”
Said Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO of QuantumScape.
“By combining our groundbreaking Cobra separator production process with Murata’s proven capabilities and global manufacturing strength, this agreement has the potential to create significant value.”
Strengthening the Solid-State Battery Ecosystem Through Strategic Partnerships
QuantumScape’s latest partnership reinforces its asset-light, capital-efficient strategy to industrialize solid-state batteries for electric vehicles.
Instead of building massive production infrastructure alone, QuantumScape is focused on forming a robust global ecosystem—a network of industry-leading partners that include:
- Equipment vendors
- Advanced materials suppliers
- Automotive OEMs
- Contract manufacturers
By tapping into external expertise while retaining control over its core IP and innovation roadmap, QuantumScape aims to accelerate commercialization timelines and reduce capital risk—a move that has been gaining traction across the battery tech landscape.
Strategic Value: Why This Deal Matters
-
For QuantumScape: This collaboration fast-tracks a critical manufacturing bottleneck—the ceramic separator—and aligns with the company’s go-to-market strategy.
-
For Murata: It opens a new vertical in energy storage by applying its core ceramics expertise in one of the most advanced segments of EV batteries.
-
For the EV Industry: A scalable, durable, and safe lithium-metal solid-state battery moves one step closer to mass production—potentially unlocking longer-range, faster-charging, and safer EVs.
What’s Next for QuantumScape and Murata?
The companies will now begin joint feasibility and development work focused on refining manufacturing workflows, validating performance at scale, and establishing quality controls. If successful, this could lead to full-scale commercial production of the ceramic separator with Murata as a strategic manufacturing partner.
The move is also expected to attract further attention from global EV OEMs and battery developers looking to integrate QuantumScape’s QSE-5 cells into next-gen electric vehicles.
