In India, the PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference made a spectacular debut. With over 550 participants from industry, 89% from academia, and 11% from policymaking and government, the two-day event, which charted the future of high-efficiency power electronics, enthralled attendees with its diverse technological and strategic insights.
The conference’s impressive lineup of more than 100 expert speakers and panelists across more than 15 conference sessions, two leadership roundtables, two tutorial sessions, and a leading-edge R&D and innovation showcase by several top exhibitors from around the globe made it more knowledge-worthy.
India currently boasts the largest synchronous grid system in the world, which is renowned for its extensive, unified coverage over a single country, a concept known as “one nation, one grid, and one frequency.” Currently, the national transmission network has around 500,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines.
Leadership Comments
Chief Guest, Honourable Dr D Saibaba, Joint Secretary-Transmission, Ministry of Power, highlighted the fundamental and foundational role of high-efficiency power electronics as the key enabler of the ongoing modernisation and upgradation of the Indian power transmission infrastructure and smart grid, for which the Government of India is very seriously committed.
He expressed: “Every day, we see how rapidly the power sector is evolving and how critical is the role of power electronics have become. As India is looking at the integration of 500 gigawatt of non-fossil by 2030 and the development of a high-capacity transmission corridor for renewable energy zones. With help from MeitY, we are planning to develop the HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) systems indigenously as they are currently imported. The power sector is transforming towards 24*7 quality power, large-scale integration of renewable energy and digitisation of both transmission and distribution networks.”
Guest of Honour, Smt Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator, R&D; Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India, expressed: “MeitY has been funding research in the power electronics industry for a long time. In India, the semiconductor mission, we are looking at some fabrication facilities in Silicon Carbide. There is a huge scope for Made in India, indigenous power electronics, circuits, devices, materials and systems. We are looking forward to collaborating and developing solutions for the country. There is a promise as the government has launched policies, fiscal support and requirements from the government. There will be exponential growth in demand within the country and the globe. This will enable India to make its mark in the field of power electronics.”
In his Keynote address, Dr Gourab Majumdar, IEEE Fellow; Senior Fellow, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation delved into, ‘The vital role of advanced power semiconductor technologies in pursuing carbon neutrality and sustainability.’
He pointed out: “Semiconductors are deployed at every important stage in the energy ecosystem. Power electronics and semiconductors are key enablers of decarbonisation and sustainability.
They can support on: Efficient integration of renewables in the generation phase, high-efficiency conversion, long-distance transmission and regional energy use in the transmission and storage phase and electrification by inverter-convertor-based systems in the consumption phase. In short, power semiconductors make energy conversion and control possible across the energy chain.”
Dr Baghaie Yazdi Mehrdad, Vice President- Systems, Applications and Software, Infineon Technologies, in his Keynote address pondered over – ‘The Age of Electricity, how Power Electronics will shape the Grid of the Future’.
He stated: “The power electronics are to become a very crucial part of energy grids. It finds great applications in DC microgrids, e-mobility, automated factories, AI data centres and more. SSTs or solid-state transformers are emerging application to modernise and replace electromagnetic transformers connecting the grid to infrastructure using semiconductors. Moreover, with power electronics, the size of the deployed machinery reduces substantially, saving huge space along with being power-efficient.”
Several keynotes and presentations underscored the important role that international technology collaboration would play in powering India’s national growth and developmental goals:
Prof Dr Leo Lorenz, President, European Centre for Power Electronics & Member, Steering Committee, PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference, shared: “India has a great development potential for power electronics. For example, Indian power electronics market is expected to grow from USD 2.8 billion today to USD 4.5 billion in 2032, with an average growth rate of more than 5%. In the last few years, with tremendous investments in the semiconductor industry, India has world-class academic institutions with excellent research programmes, active global university programmes and industry collaborations. This is an excellent prerequisite to becoming a major player in the world market, along with this transition to consider the environmental impact and considering the global warming potential.”
Mr Puneet Tyagi, Chief General Manager, Engineering HVDC, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd expressed: “I am delighted with PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference as collecting all semiconductor manufacturers and industry at one place is something very topical and very relevant to the transmission ecosystem.”

After the New Delhi edition, the flagship international edition of PCIM Expo & Conference will be held from 9-11 June 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany, followed by the PCIM Asia Shenzhen from 26-28 August 2026 in Shenzhen, China.
