OMNIVISION Rollsout TheiaCel OV50R Image Sensor

The new OV50R CMOS image sensor from OMNIVISION boasts a high frame rate, fast focusing, outstanding low-light performance, and an ultra-high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 110 dB for video and preview with a single exposure.OMNIVISION OV50R CMOS image sensor with high frame rate

With its 50-megapixel (MP) sensor and 1.2-micron (µm) pixel, the OV50R is intended for use in high-end consumer electronics such as smartphones and action, vlog, and pocket cameras.

The OV50R CMOS Image Sensor Supports:

  • 4-cell binning for 12.5MP at 120 fps and 4K 60 fps with three-channel HDR with 4x sensitivity for excellent low-light performance.
  • It offers premium-quality 8K video with dual analog gain (DAG) HDR and on-sensor crop zoom.
  • OMNIVISION’s second-generation TheiaCel™ technology further expands single exposure HDR to 110dB. The sensor supports 100% coverage quad phase detection (QPD) for best-in-class autofocus performance.

Leadership CommentsOMNIVISION OV50R CMOS image sensor with high frame rate

“OMNIVISION introduced a TheiaCel™ sensor to the mobile market, the OV50X, for flagship smartphones in April 2025. With the launch of the OV50R, we are further expanding the TheiaCel™ product family, offering our patented technology to a broader range of smartphones,” said Keneki Kure, Mobile Product Marketing Director, OMNIVISION.

“Our OV50R is the industry’s leading image sensor designed for high-end main cameras in a 1/1.3-inch optical format that offers 4K three-channel HDR and a high frame rate at 60 frames per second (fps). Compared with the previous-generation 1.2?micron (µm) pixel TheiaCel™ sensor, OV50K, the new mobile TheiaCel™ sensor OV50R delivers approximately 20% lower power consumption, enabling longer HDR video capture while maintaining system stability. With the OV50R, a broader range of smartphones and action cameras are capable of superior video and photo capture around the clock, even in challenging lighting conditions,” added Keneki.

The OV50R is sampling now and will be in mass production in Q1 2026.
