MIFARE DUOX, the first NFC contactless integrated circuit (IC) in its class to integrate symmetric and asymmetric cryptography into a single product, was unveiled by NXP Semiconductors.MIFARE DUOX first NFC contactless IC by NXP for Keys

By lowering the complexity of key management and key distribution, it aids in the simplification of security for NFC applications, including secure auto access, electric vehicle (EV) charging authentication, and other access management applications.

High-performing, extremely secure, and reasonably priced NFC system solutions are made possible by the combination of improved security, asymmetric authentication, and sophisticated functionality.

NFC-enabled applications, which offer practical tap-to-access features, are becoming more and more important in smart cities. Applications for MIFARE DUOX are numerous and include corporate access control systems, secure vehicle entry, and EV charging.

Using the public key infrastructure (PKI) principle, MIFARE DUOX integrates symmetric and asymmetric encryption to greatly simplify key distribution and administration.

MIFARE DUOX Integrates:

  • Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography.
  • Combine symmetric AES-256 cryptography technology and asymmetric elliptic curve cryptography (ECC).
  • Streamline and expand key management and distribution flexibility.
  • Improved security features including Transaction Signature to verify the legitimacy of completed NFC transactions and Proximity Check to stop relay attacks.

NFC contactless IC is appropriate for high-security industries because it is Common Criteria EAL 6+ certified on both the hardware and software levels.

With an increased operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C, MIFARE DUOX is compatible with ISO/SAE 21434, MISRA-C, and automotive industry standards. It is designed for harsh conditions, including outdoor and automotive use cases.

True multi-application and multi-purpose use scenarios are made possible by MIFARE DUOX’s adaptable file system design. Installing an application after issuance on a single IC across numerous card issuers and service providers is also included in this.

End users will have more convenience because they just need to carry one NFC-enabled MIFARE DUOX smartcard in their pocket, which houses numerous applications on a single device, including corporate access, EV charging, user authorization, reward programs, and many more.

Key Comments

“In fast-growing verticals like EV charging authentication or secure car access, we’re enabling the industry to reduce the complexity of key distribution and management, without compromising on contactless transaction speed or product versatility,” said André Perchthaler, Senior Director, MIFARE, NXP. “MIFARE DUOX delivers new features, as well as versatile configuration options and settings to support more flexible NFC system solutions, while also delivering cost-efficiency and high security.”
