Microchip Launches 10G and 25G Optical Ethernet PHYs with PTP and MACsec

The need for advanced networking systems that can function over long distances and in challenging environments is growing due to the growth of smart factories, remote monitoring, and connected infrastructure. Microchip Technology presents its new line of Optical Ethernet PHY transceivers, which come in 25 Gbps and 10 Gbps versions and have IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and Media Access Control Security (MACsec) encryption, to meet the demand for reliable and safe connectivity solutions.

New Optical Ethernet PHY Transceivers by Microchip

Microchip’s Optical Ethernet PHY transceivers Provide

  • Secure, deterministic and scalable alternative to traditional copper-based Ethernet solutions.
  • Support link lengths of up to 10 kilometers over single-mode fiber for seamless deployments over dispersed infrastructure such as company and college campuses or warehouses.
  • Integration of PTP time stamping delivers sub-nanosecond (<1ns) synchronization accuracy across distributed nodes.
  • This level of timing precision is essential for time-sensitive applications such as industrial automation, telecommunications and robotics.

    • LAN8044-V/3HW: 25 Gbps, Quad-port, PTP, MACsec

Higher bandwidth is possible for data-intensive applications including data centers, campus area networks, and robotic/industrial automation thanks to the latest variants support for Ethernet speeds between 1 Gbps and 25 Gbps.

By choosing the right data rate and media (Optical or DAC-Direct Attach Copper) to meet their application requirements, designers may effortlessly grow their networks.

Security is implemented at the silicon level with support for MACsec (IEEE 802.1AE) encryption to help protect sensitive data in networked contexts.

By encrypting Ethernet device traffic, this hardware-based approach guards against network data breaches. In order to protect data integrity throughout the network, MACsec is made to withstand common cyberattacks such man-in-the-middle attacks, denial-of-service (DoS), eavesdropping, and spoofing.

Transceivers and high port-count switches with speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 25 Gbps are all part of Microchip’s extensive portfolio of Ethernet solutions, which also includes a full line of Single Pair Ethernet devices to meet the demands of embedded, automotive, and industrial applications.

Microchip’s devices allow dependable and scalable communication in difficult situations with a variety of characteristics like security, low latency, and extended temperature support.

New Optical Ethernet PHY Transceivers by Microchip Leadership Comments

“Design engineers are looking for solutions that simplify complex networking systems, adding PTP or MACsec could mean a complete overhaul of an existing design, our solution helps preserve our customers’ core-processing investment,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s networking and connectivity solutions business. “We’ve integrated these capabilities into our transceivers, enabling bolt-on functionality to help engineers build smarter, more secure and scalable networks.”

Development Tools

To simplify development, the portfolio of Optical Ethernet PHY Transceivers are supported by the LAN8044 Evaluation Kit (part number EA00J09A) which includes the LAN8044 EDSX Daughter Card (part number EV57U68A) and the EVB-VSC7558TSN EDSX (UNG8415).
