Robotics applications require the safety of gravity-loaded axes. mayr Power Transmission demonstrated how the new ROBA top-stop safety brakes enable this in smart surroundings at the SPS 2025 in Nuremberg. Permanent brake monitoring is made possible by the ROBA brake-checker module that is compatible. When paired with the ROBA gateway, the system provides useful information for smart production environments, a digital twin, and proactive machine maintenance. Furthermore, a useful checklist facilitates brake validation.

Protecting both people and materials is crucial for production facilities or robots with gravity-loaded axes. The basis here is provided by safety brakes constructed in accordance with the fail-safe concept, i.e., applied in de-energized condition.
In the event of a power outage or an emergency stop, the Mayr power transmission’s ROBA topstop keeps the loads firmly in place and inhibits uncontrollable movements. The brakes may be retrofitted into existing structures because they are positioned between the motor and the output, which saves money and work.
Robust Construction Ensures Reliability
For day-to-day industrial operations, the ROBA topstop braking system is equipped as an independent, compact module. O-rings at the interfaces ensure reliable sealing against dust and moisture – the brakes achieve IP66 protection as standard. The vertical axes remain secured even when the drive is dismantled, which is advantageous during maintenance and transport. Thanks to the adaptable flange dimensions, the system can be easily integrated into existing constructions.
Sensorless monitoring – Data for Smart Production
Mayr provides a module that monitors the safety brakes without the need for extra sensors with the ROBA brake-checker. It allows for preventative maintenance by identifying the brake’s condition based on voltage and current trends.
Critical parameters are consistently identified, including coil temperature, switching time, and functional reserves.
The extra ROBA gateway module makes the system network-compatible, allowing for the creation of digital twins or the integration of the gathered data into current remote maintenance systems, for example, guaranteeing intelligent production and increased drive line transparency.
Validation Tool Simplifies Dimensioning
In addition to the technology, Mayr provides technical support: dimensioning in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13849-1 is made simpler by a specifically designed validation aid with the safety characteristic value B10d.
The organized checklist allows for a uniform evaluation of the deployed brakes and contains all pertinent information regarding the applicable fundamental and tried-and-true safety standards.
It is especially useful that TÜV (German Technical Inspectorate) has classified the ROBA topstop as a “well-tried component” under category 1.
mayr is providing well thought-out end-to-end solutions for safety-critical automation applications with its latest generation of brakes and related digital modules. Mayr demonstrated at the SPS 2025 how smart drive components guarantee the availability of important data while simultaneously enhancing safety.
