Mastercard has expanded its Greener Payments Partnership (GPP) by adding Infineon Technologies to its advisory council, strengthening efforts to develop sustainable payment cards.
Infineon’s SECORA™ Pay Green technology is driving innovation in eco-friendly payment solutions, aligning with Mastercard’s mission to reduce first-use plastic and lower CO? emissions in the payments industry.
SECORA™ Pay Green: Revolutionizing Sustainable Payment Cards
Infineon’s SECORA™ Pay Green provides the technical foundation for fully recyclable, dual-interface contactless payment cards that eliminate the need for additional antennas. This innovation supports Mastercard’s commitment to sustainability by promoting card designs that reduce plastic use and carbon footprints.
“SECORA Pay Green sets a new standard for eco-friendly payment cards, contributing to a greener future in the payment industry,” said Tolgahan Yildiz, Head of Trusted Mobile Connectivity and Transactions Product Line at Infineon. “By lowering CO? emissions and enhancing recyclability, we help financial institutions meet growing customer demand for sustainable banking.”
A Growing Market for Eco-Friendly Payment Cards
According to ABI Research, demand for sustainable banking practices is rising. The number of payment cards made from recycled PVC (rPVC) is expected to reach 1.2 billion cards by 2028, a significant increase from 226 million in 2022.
Joe Pitcher, Vice President of Mastercard’s Sustainable Card Program, emphasized the importance of such advancements: “We’ve proven that payment cards can be made from materials that reduce first-use plastic. With innovations like Infineon’s SECORA Pay Green, we’re pushing the boundaries of sustainable card development.”
Paving the Way for a Sustainable Payments Ecosystem
Mastercard and its partners, including Infineon, will focus on minimizing CO? emissions across the entire payment card lifecycle—from chip to module and inlay. Exceet Card Group has already become the first European card manufacturer to receive Mastercard’s Letter of Approval based on SECORA Pay Green, enabling the production of sustainable contactless payment cards without additional inlays.
Infineon’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality
SECORA Pay Green is part of Infineon’s broader climate strategy, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030. By enabling the production of recyclable, contactless payment cards from eco-friendly materials, Infineon is helping the financial industry take a significant step toward sustainability.
