Kioxia Unveils 24.5TB SSD: Pushing the Limits of Data Storage

Marking a landmark achievement in the data storage industry, Kioxia has unveiled a 24.5TB solid-state drive (SSD), now claimed to be the world’s highest-capacity SSD. This massive capacity, built for enterprise-level applications, reflects the growing demand for faster, more durable, and ultra-dense storage solutions in a data-driven world.

Breaking the Terabyte Barrier

The new SSD from Kioxia belongs to the CD8P series, which utilizes PCIe Gen5 interface and the EDSFF E3.S form factor.

With its 24.5TB capacity, the drive offers enough space to store approximately 12,500 4K movies.

This innovation is aimed not at casual users, but at data centers, hyperscalers, and enterprises that handle vast volumes of data for AI, cloud computing, analytics, and content delivery services.

Next-Gen Architecture and Performance

The CD8P series is built on Kioxia’s proprietary 218-layer BiCS 3D TLC NAND flash technology. This high-density memory architecture allows for improved power efficiency, better performance, and greater reliability — all critical for always-on enterprise systems.

The SSD leverages PCIe 5.0 connectivity, which provides significantly faster data transfer speeds compared to previous generations. According to Kioxia, the drive is capable of reaching up to 14 GB/s sequential read speeds and around 7 GB/s for sequential writes.

Random read/write performance also sees a substantial boost, ensuring smooth multitasking and rapid access to massive datasets.

Designed for Hyperscale and Enterprise Needs

The new drive isn’t intended for everyday consumer desktops but rather for high-performance servers, hyperscale data centers, and cloud infrastructure.

Its E3.S form factor — part of the latest EDSFF standard — offers better cooling, scalability, and manageability in dense storage environments.

These factors are crucial in the AI era, where demand for real-time data processing and storage is surging.

Reliability and Efficiency

With a focus on efficiency, the 24.5TB SSD features enterprise-grade power loss protection and end-to-end data path protection.

It also supports NVMe 2.0 protocol, offering enhanced command sets and optimized resource management.

These features ensure that large-scale applications experience minimal downtime, reduced latency, and consistent performance under heavy workloads.

High-Capacity SSD

The release of such a high-capacity SSD marks a notable moment in enterprise storage evolution. As businesses expand their data infrastructures to support machine learning, cloud-native applications, and video-heavy content, high-capacity SSDs like this one are becoming essential.

Kioxia’s latest offering could set a new standard, pushing other storage manufacturers to pursue even denser, faster, and more resilient storage solutions.

Kioxia’s 24.5TB SSD not only showcases the rapid pace of innovation in storage technology but also highlights the shifting priorities in enterprise IT infrastructure — moving from mechanical drives to robust, scalable, and lightning-fast SSDs.

As data demands grow, breakthroughs like these ensure businesses remain agile, responsive, and ready for the next wave of digital transformation.
