South of Scotland to become home to UK’s most advanced home battery assembly plant, delivering world first energy storage technology with pilot installations in social housing already delivering life-changing results for tenants

John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland, has visited the Dumfries site where Kight Powerhubs will build its new state?of?the?art manufacturing facility, confirming the creation of up to 700 high?technology jobs in the south of Scotland. The visit marks a major milestone for the company, which is already transforming lives for social?housing tenants across the region through its revolutionary Powerhub home energy battery system.

The Dumfries facility will be Scotland’s first home energy storage factory and will serve as the primary assembly plant for the Kight Powerhub. The system is the result of six years of research and development, including four years of collaboration between South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE) and Kight Powerhubs.

Kight PowerHub Install 0001 in Scotland with World First Battery Chemistry Technology, Zero Fire Risk and 25 year Warranty – Landscape

This innovative 10kWh AI?enabled battery has been designed with direct feedback from South of Scotland registered social landlords and draws on Formula One?inspired engineering.

The UK?designed and assembled Powerhub uses a pioneering battery chemistry that has never before been deployed in domestic settings.

It delivers zero fire risk, backed by leading insurers, with 100% usable capacity at all times, an industry?leading 25?year warranty, and a lifespan of up to 20,000 cycles. It also provides full battery backup in the event of a power?grid outage, giving households energy security as well as savings.

Real?world impact in social housing

Early Powerhub units installed in social?housing properties in the south of Scotland in 2025 have already shown how the system can meaningfully improve tenants’ quality of life.

The Powerhub is designed to cut electricity bills by around 80%, with zero energy bills possible when paired with solar panels. That means families can heat their homes, cook hot meals, and work remotely without constant anxiety over their next electricity bill.

Each home with a Powerhub saves roughly 145kg of CO? per year (about 5kWh shifted daily from peak periods), equivalent to taking a car off the road for 400 miles.

Scotland’s renewable energy advantage

Scotland generates significantly more renewable electricity than it consumes. To fully harness that clean energy, storage is essential and the Powerhub is uniquely positioned to close the gap.

Its AI control platform, EnergiFlow, automatically optimises charging and discharging to sync with the cheapest and greenest periods on the grid. This turns Scotland’s renewable surplus into direct savings and greener energy use for tenants, without any technical knowledge or manual intervention on their part.

In 2025, Muriel Allison, a Scottish Borders Housing Association tenant in Galashiels, became the world’s first person to use the Powerhub’s novel battery chemistry at home.

Previously, she had wrapped herself in blankets to stay warm on cold nights; she told local media the system made a significant difference to her daily life.

Jan Davies, a mother?of?two from Skirling whose monthly electricity bills had approached the cost of her rent, also received a Powerhub installation. Cabinet Secretary for Housing Màiri McAllan visited her home to see the benefits firsthand.

The Kight Powerhub: technical overview

The Powerhub is a 10kWh, AI?enabled battery storage system that charges from the grid during off?peak tariff periods, from solar panels, or from other renewable sources, then makes that stored energy available during peak?cost periods.

It is the only domestic battery to use its unique cell chemistry, which delivers:

  • Zero fire risk, even if cells are physically damaged, endorsed by leading insurers
  • 100% usable capacity at all times, regardless of demand or temperature
  • A 25?year warranty—the longest available in the domestic storage sector
  • A 20,000?cycle lifespan, ensuring reliable performance over its full operating life
  • No buffer restrictions, unlike competing systems that limit accessible capacity
  • Automatic grid?failure backup, providing energy security during outages

The EnergiFlow AI control platform learns each household’s energy patterns and automatically works with solar panels, heat pumps, and off?peak tariffs to minimise bills and carbon emissions, without any intervention required from residents.

Leadership Comment

Russel Griggs, Chairman of South of Scotland Enterprise, said:

“The south of Scotland has always had the talent, ambition, and industrial heritage to compete at the highest level. What Kight Powerhubs has built is not just a remarkable product—it is a world?first technology, developed here, being manufactured here, and addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing our communities: the cost of keeping a home warm, comfortable, and usable in the face of rising energy prices. The fact that it also helps Scotland make the most of its extraordinary renewable resources means its impact will be felt far beyond our borders. This is exactly why SOSE exists.”

John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland, said:

“It is very welcome that this facility will create more than 700 highly?skilled jobs in Dumfries, and a further 2,000 across the supply chain. That is a significant, long?term investment in the South of Scotland—but the benefits go far beyond employment.

Kight has worked with South of Scotland Enterprise to pilot this battery technology in local social housing, which means people will see their homes become warmer, more energy?efficient, and more affordable to heat. That will help save people money.

Battery technology like this is central to securing Scotland’s energy future. It helps store clean power, reduces our dependence on volatile fossil?fuel markets, and supports the transition to net zero in a way that genuinely includes communities instead of leaving them behind.”

Lawrence Fagg, Founder of Kight Powerhubs, said:

“Seeing the difference the Powerhub makes in people’s everyday lives is exactly why we built this company. When a tenant tells us they can now freely turn on their heating, cook a hot meal, or work from home without dreading the next electricity bill, that is the true measure of what we have achieved. Our pilot installations in 2025 showed not only meaningful CO? savings and lower bills, but a real improvement in quality of life, warmth, dignity, and the freedom to live normally.

That is the change we are here to make and Dumfries is where we will scale it. Building our assembly plant here, in the south of Scotland where we’ve worked so closely with SOSE, means the region that inspired this technology will now lead its manufacture and help deliver it to social?housing tenants across the country.”
