How Keysight, NTT Achieved Highest Data Rate in 300 GHz Band

Testing confirmed its saturated power level at +9.1 dBm and achieved a 280 Gbps data rate (35 GBaud 256QAM) at 0 dBm power output — the highest data rate reported to date in the 300 GHz band.Keysight VCA 280 Gbps record data rate Sub-Terahertz for 6G the volt post

Keysight Technologies announced that it has set a new world record for data rate achieved sub-THz frequencies in partnership with NTT Corporation (NTT) and NTT Innovative Devices Corporation (NTT Innovative Devices).

Together with NTT’s and NTT Innovative Devices’ high-output, wide-bandwidth J-band Indium Phosphide (InP)-based power amplifier (PA), Keysight’s Vector Component Analyzer (VCA) helped achieve this milestone. Furthermore, sophisticated digital predistortion techniques were used to reduce amplifier non-linearities and guarantee reliable, high-fidelity signal generation.

Wide bandwidth capabilities provided by sub-THz frequencies are in high demand for precision radar sensing and high-speed wireless communication due to the quick development of 6G, AI, and autonomous driving technologies.

For these systems to be developed and implemented, high-quality modulated signals must be used for validation. However, the difficulties of signal amplification and distortion control at greater power levels have made it difficult to obtain high-quality signals in the sub-THz range.

The collaboration between Keysight, NTT, and NTT Innovative Devices successfully demonstrated the power amplifier’s effectiveness in the 300-GHz frequency band. Testing confirmed its saturated power level at +9.1 dBm and achieved a 280 Gbps data rate (35 GBaud 256QAM) at 0 dBm power output — the highest data rate reported to date in the 300 GHz band.

This significant achievement is largely attributed to Keysight’s Vector Component Analyzer, built on the latest N524XB series PNA-X Microwave Network Analyzers equipped with digital predistortion techniques, which optimized signal integrity and minimized distortion to enable this unprecedented data transmission speed.
